Dryer problems and what usually causes them
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Takes two or more cycles to dry | Clogged or crushed vent, dirty moisture sensor bars | Clean the vent; clean sensor bars |
| No heat (electric) | Heating element, thermal fuse, high-limit or cycling thermostat | Replace the failed part and find out why it failed |
| No heat (gas) | Igniter, gas valve coils, flame sensor | Replace igniter, coils or sensor |
| Won’t start | Door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, broken belt | Test and replace the failed part |
| Drum doesn’t turn | Broken drive belt, failed idler pulley or motor | Replace belt, pulley or motor |
| Squeaking, thumping or squealing | Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, belt or drum glides | Replace worn parts |
| Stops mid-cycle | Overheating from a clogged vent, failing motor | Clean vent; test motor and thermostats |
| Top of the dryer very hot | Restricted airflow | Clean the vent run and lint housing |
Why the dryer vent matters so much
A clogged vent is the most common reason a dryer takes too long, and the most common reason heating parts burn out. When air can’t escape, the dryer overheats, the thermal fuse blows, and lint builds up in a hot space, which is a real fire risk. A few rules of thumb:
- Clean the lint screen after every load.
- Have the vent run checked and cleaned about once a year, more often for large households.
- Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, not white plastic or foil accordion duct.
- Keep the run short. Building codes generally limit a 4-inch vent to about 35 feet, minus 5 feet for every 90-degree turn, unless the manufacturer allows more.
If your dryer has been getting slower for months, ask for a vent check when you book.
Gas dryers at Colorado altitude
At 5,000 to 6,000 feet, gas dryers that weren’t adjusted for elevation can heat slowly or burn inefficiently. We check burner operation on every gas dryer call before replacing parts.
Before you call: quick checks
- Clean the lint screen and look inside the screen slot for buildup.
- Pull the dryer out a few inches and make sure the vent hose isn’t crushed or disconnected.
- Go outside while it runs and check that air is blowing strongly from the vent hood.
- Electric dryer with no heat? Check the breaker; electric dryers use a double breaker, and one half can trip.
- Gas dryer? Make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open.
How much does dryer repair cost?
Most dryer repairs fall between $100 and $400, including heating elements, igniters, thermal fuses, belts, rollers and switches. Motor and control board replacements are at the higher end. You get a written quote before work starts, and the service call fee is waived when you proceed.
Repair or replace your dryer?
Dryers are simple machines, and most repairs make sense even on a 12- to 15-year-old unit. Replacement is worth considering mainly when the drum, motor and control all need work at once, or when parts are no longer available.

Frequently Asked Questions
In most cases the vent is clogged, crushed or too long, so moist air can't escape. Dirty moisture sensor bars can also cut cycles short. We check the vent on every dryer call.
On electric dryers it's usually the heating element, thermal fuse or a thermostat. On gas dryers it's usually the igniter, gas valve coils or flame sensor. A blown thermal fuse often means the vent is restricted, so we fix the cause too.
It's usually worn drum rollers, an idler pulley or the belt. It isn't immediately dangerous, but it's best to repair it before the belt breaks.
Yes. We clean dryer vents and check the vent run during dryer repairs, since a clogged vent is the most common cause of slow drying and burned-out heating parts.
Most dryer repairs cost $100–$400. Motors and control boards are at the higher end. You get a written quote first, and the service call fee is waived when you proceed.
