Ice maker problems and what usually causes them

Symptom Most likely cause Typical fix
No ice at all Ice maker switched off, failed water inlet valve, frozen fill tube, failed ice maker module Thaw the tube; replace valve or ice maker
Small, hollow or few cubes Clogged water filter, low water pressure, partially failed valve Replace filter or valve
Ice maker works, dispenser doesn’t Jammed auger, ice clumps, dispenser motor or door switch Clear the jam; replace motor or switch
Ice clumped or frozen together Freezer temperature swings, door left open, defrost issue Fix temperature or defrost problem
Ice buildup in the door ice compartment Air leak around the ice compartment seal or a heater fault (common on some French-door models) Replace seal, heater or fan; defrost the compartment
Water leaking from the ice maker Overfilling valve, cracked fill cup, misaligned ice maker Replace valve or ice maker; realign
Bad-tasting or cloudy ice Old water filter, scale in undercounter machines Replace filter; clean and descale

Before you call: quick checks

  1. Is it on? Check the ice maker switch or the setting on the control panel, and make sure the shut-off arm isn’t raised.
  2. Check the freezer temperature. Ice makers work best at about 0°F; above 10°F many stop producing.
  3. Replace the water filter if it’s more than about six months old.
  4. Test the water supply. If the dispenser runs slowly too, the problem is upstream: the filter, the valve, or a kinked line behind the fridge.
  5. New install or move? Make sure the water line behind the fridge isn’t kinked when the unit was pushed back.

Undercounter and clear-ice machines

Standalone ice machines in bars, basements and outdoor kitchens need regular cleaning and descaling to keep producing. Scale buildup slows production and makes cubes cloudy, and outdoor units in Colorado need to be drained before the first freeze. We repair and service undercounter ice makers from Sub-Zero, U-Line, Scotsman, KitchenAid, Whirlpool and others.

How much does ice maker repair cost?

Most ice maker repairs fall between $100 and $400, including water inlet valves, ice maker assemblies, dispenser motors and door switches. Undercounter machines and repairs that involve the refrigerator’s sealed system can cost more. You get a written quote first, and the service call fee is waived when you proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common causes are a freezer that's too warm, a clogged filter, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve or a failed ice maker module. Check that the ice maker is on and the freezer is near 0°F first.

Usually not enough water is reaching the ice maker because of a clogged filter, low water pressure or a weak inlet valve. Replacing the filter often fixes it.

On some French-door models, warm air leaks into the in-door ice compartment or a heater fails, and ice builds up and jams the ice maker. We repair the seal, heater or fan and clear the compartment.

Yes. We repair and descale undercounter ice makers from Sub-Zero, U-Line, Scotsman, KitchenAid and others, indoors and in outdoor kitchens.

Most ice maker repairs run $100–$400; undercounter machines can cost more. You get a written quote first, and the service call fee is waived when you proceed.
