Commercial ice machine repair in Denver: modular cubers, undercounter units, nugget and flake machines, ice dispensers and remote condensers. The Appliance Team repairs commercial ice equipment for restaurants, bars, hotels, schools, clinics and grocery stores across the Denver metro and 30 surrounding cities. Commercial calls are same-day or next-day, and the $129 commercial diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you go ahead. You get a written quote before any work starts, and every repair carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Our technicians are EPA 608 certified, so refrigerant and sealed-system work on cubers and remote condensers is done in-house.
Ice machines and brands we service
We work on every major commercial ice brand, in or out of the manufacturer’s warranty. The table shows the equipment types we see most often.
| Equipment type | Common brands and series | What we fix |
|---|---|---|
| Modular cubers (head on bin or dispenser) | Hoshizaki KM, Manitowoc Indigo and Indigo NXT, Scotsman Prodigy and Prodigy ELITE, Ice-O-Matic CIM, Kold-Draft, Blue Air, Atosa | Long freeze and long harvest faults, hot gas valves, water pumps, float switches, thermistors, control boards, compressors, refrigerant leaks |
| Undercounter cubers | Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, U-Line, Scotsman undercounter models | No ice, slow production, drain pump and gravity drain problems, bin thermostats, condenser airflow |
| Nugget and flake machines | Scotsman Prodigy flaked and nugget, Hoshizaki, Follett, Manitowoc, Ice-O-Matic | Auger motors and gear reducers, auger bearings, evaporators, ice sensors, water level controls |
| Ice and beverage dispensers | Follett Symphony, Cornelius, Scotsman, Hoshizaki, Manitowoc | Dispense motors, agitators, chutes, solenoids, transport tubes, drain lines |
| Remote-condenser systems | Hoshizaki URC condensers, Manitowoc remote and QuietQube-style condensing units, Scotsman remote models | Condenser fan motors, line sets, headmaster and pressure controls, leak search and recharge |
| Water-cooled machines | All major brands | Water regulating valves, scaled condensers, high head pressure faults |
We also repair the bins, filters and drains that support the machine, because a cuber is only as reliable as its water supply and its drain.

Long freeze and long harvest: why the machine shuts itself off
Every modern cuber times its freeze and harvest cycles. When a cycle runs too long, the board assumes something is wrong and protects the evaporator and compressor by stopping. On a Hoshizaki KM, a normal freeze runs about 30–35 minutes and a normal harvest about 3–5 minutes; the board allows 60 and 20 minutes before it alarms. Manitowoc boards use 60 minutes for freeze and 3.5 minutes for harvest on single-evaporator machines. A long freeze usually points to a refrigeration problem, a leaking water valve, a stuck float or a dirty condenser. A long harvest usually means the hot gas valve is not opening, a thermistor is reading wrong, or scale is holding the ice to the plate. Resetting the machine without finding the cause just buys another shutdown.
Scale is the root cause of most service calls
Ice machines concentrate minerals as water freezes. The minerals stay behind in the sump and coat the evaporator, the distribution tube and the water sensors. Nu-Calgon notes that scale leads to plugged distribution holes, restricted water flow and, eventually, a machine that hangs up or jams. Many evaporators are nickel- or tin-plated, so the descaler has to be one the manufacturer approves. Scotsman states its Clear 1 scale remover is safe on nickel-plated evaporators, but that overuse can shorten evaporator life and the concentration must be correct. Manitowoc approves only Manitowoc cleaner and sanitizer for its machines. We use the cleaner the manufacturer specifies for your model.
Nugget and flake machines wear differently
Nugget and flake machines freeze water on the inside of a cylinder and use an auger to push the ice out. That means bearings, seals and a gear motor carry the load. Scotsman flags this directly: code 2 on a Prodigy flaker or nugget machine means the auger motor is drawing too much current. Scale on the evaporator wall, worn bearings or a failing gear reducer are the usual reasons. Scotsman’s preventive maintenance guidance includes checking the upper breaker bearing on nugget units and re-greasing it as needed.
Ice machine error codes and alarms
Codes are the fastest way to a correct diagnosis. Write down the code, the beep pattern or the light pattern before you reset anything, because a reset can clear the history. Code meanings and timing limits vary by brand, control board generation and model, so treat these tables as a guide and confirm against the label inside your machine.
Hoshizaki KM control board alarms
Hoshizaki KM boards signal faults with beeps every 3 seconds. The red LED stays lit when control voltage is correct. Green LEDs show which relay is on: 1 compressor, 2 hot gas valve, 3 pump-out, 4 water valve. Manual-reset alarms need the white reset button on the board pressed with power on.
| Alarm | Meaning | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 beep | High evaporator temperature during harvest (above 127°F). Manual reset. | Hot gas valve stuck open, shorted thermistor, or hot water reaching the machine |
| 2 beeps | Harvest backup timer: harvest over 20 minutes, twice in a row. Manual reset. | Thermistor out of range, hot gas valve not opening, leaking TXV or liquid line valve, weak compressor, leaking water regulating valve on water-cooled units |
| 3 beeps | Freeze backup timer: freeze over 60 minutes, twice in a row. Manual reset. | Float switch stuck closed, water valve or hot gas valve leaking in freeze, pump not running, TXV problem, weak compressor |
| 6 beeps | Low control voltage | Check incoming power and the control transformer output |
| 7 beeps | High control voltage. Resets automatically when voltage returns to normal. | Check supply voltage and the transformer |
Manitowoc Indigo and Indigo NXT event codes
On Indigo machines, press the Down arrow to Event Log, press the checkmark, and choose View ELog. Each entry shows the code, when it happened and how many times. Indigo NXT machines use a 2.8-inch icon-based easyTouch display with service menus, reminders and alerts.
| Code | Meaning | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| E01 Long Freeze | Freeze reached 60 minutes for 6 consecutive cycles. Machine shuts down (Safety Limit 1). | Refrigeration diagnosis, leaking water or hot gas valve, dirty condenser |
| E02 Long Harvest | Harvest reached 3.5 minutes (7 minutes on multiple-evaporator models). Logged as Safety Limit 2; the machine stops after 500 consecutive long harvests. | Descale, test hot gas valve and harvest assist, check thermistors |

| E32 / E33 / E34 | RS485 communication, keyboard or display fault | Check connections, replace the failed part |
Older Manitowoc control boards do not show E-codes. They flash the harvest light: once for Safety Limit 1 (long freeze) and twice for Safety Limit 2 (long harvest). On those boards, three consecutive long cycles stop the machine, it restarts after 60 minutes of standby, and a second trip keeps it off until someone restarts it. A single harvest light flash during freeze, when water touches the ice thickness probe, is normal.
Scotsman Prodigy, Prodigy Plus and Prodigy ELITE cuber codes
Prodigy cubers show a single character on the control board display. A flashing number means the machine is retrying on its own. A steady number means it has shut down. Prodigy ELITE models add AutoAlert front-panel lights with descale and sanitize reminders, and can send alerts to the ICELINQ app.
| Code | Meaning | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (flashing / steady) | Maximum freeze time: retrying / shut down | Refrigeration diagnosis, condenser cleaning, water valve check |
| 2 (flashing / steady) | Maximum harvest time: retrying / shut down | Descale, hot gas valve, harvest assist, sump sensor |
| 3 | Slow water fill | Filter cartridge, inlet screen, inlet valve, water pressure |
| 4 | High discharge temperature | Condenser airflow, fan motor, refrigerant charge |
| 5 | Sump temperature sensor failure | Replace sensor |
| 7 | Discharge temperature sensor failure | Replace sensor |
| 8 (flashing / steady) | Short freeze: retrying / thin ice | Water level or ice thickness issue, sensor check |
| F, H, b, C | Freeze, harvest, bin full, clean cycle (normal status) | No action |
| L, d, O | Board locked, test mode, off | No fault; L with all four upper lights flashing means a remote lockout |
| E | Self test failed | Control board diagnosis |
Scotsman Prodigy flaked and nugget codes
Press and release the Clean button to step through the last 10 codes, newest first. Holding Clean and Off for 3 seconds clears them, so record the codes first.
| Code | Meaning | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (flashing / steady) | No ice sensed: restart mode / manual reset required | Refrigeration diagnosis, ice sensor check, water supply |
| 2 (flashing / steady) | Auger motor over amp: restart mode / manual reset required | Descale evaporator, auger bearings, gear motor |
| 3 | Slow water fill | Filter, inlet valve, reservoir float |
| 4 | Pressure control open | Condenser airflow, fan motor, charge |
Ice-O-Matic CIM codes
Ice-O-Matic CIM cubers flash the Power and Clean LEDs. Holding Power and Clean for 3 seconds clears codes and counters.
| Code | LED pattern and meaning | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Power LED quick red flash: maximum freeze (1 hour) | Refrigeration, condenser, water valve leaking during freeze |
| 2 | Power LED slow flash when off: sump water thermistor failure | Replace thermistor |
| 3 | Power red and Clean yellow quick flash: maximum fill (5 minutes) | Water supply, filter, inlet valve |
| 4 | Double red and double yellow: maximum purge (2 minutes) | Purge valve, drain restriction |
| 5 | Double red quick flash: maximum harvest (7.5 minutes) | Descale, hot gas valve, harvest assist |
| 6 | Triple red quick flash: maximum freeze and maximum harvest | Full refrigeration and harvest diagnosis |
| 7 | Triple red and triple yellow: water level error, float did not close | Water pump, pump relay, float switch, leaking inlet valve, unvented drain |
Follett, Cornelius, Kold-Draft, Blue Air, Atosa and U-Line machines use their own indicator schemes, and many simpler units have no codes at all. In that case we read the cycle through test mode and gauges.
How a commercial ice machine repair visit works
- Diagnosis. The technician reads code history, watches a full freeze and harvest cycle, and checks water supply, drain, condenser and refrigerant pressures as needed. The $129 commercial diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you proceed.
- Written quote. You get the price before work begins, with an honest note if the machine is close to the end of its life.
- Parts. We use genuine OEM parts whenever they are available, and we tell you when a part has to be ordered.
- Warranty. We repair in or out of the manufacturer’s warranty, and the choice of who does the work is yours. Our own repairs carry a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.
Before you call: safe checks
- Write down any code, beep count or light pattern before you reset the machine.
- Confirm the water supply valve is open and the filter cartridge is not past its change date.
- Look at the air filter and condenser intake on self-contained air-cooled units. Clear boxes and storage blocking airflow.
- Check that the bin drain and machine drain are not backed up, and that the drain has an air gap.
- Make sure the bin curtain or bin sensor is in place and not blocked by ice.
- If the breaker tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
Denver notes: water and health rules
Denver Water describes its water as soft to moderately hard. The southern collection system is moderately hard, the northern system is somewhat soft, and water runs slightly harder in winter. That means two restaurants a few miles apart can see very different scale rates, and the same machine can scale faster in winter. A filter sized for your machine and a cleaning interval matched to your water make the biggest difference.
The FDA Food Code defines food to include ice, so the ice in your bin is inspected like any other food. Colorado adopted the 2022 FDA Food Code by reference, effective March 16, 2024. Slime in the bin, a moldy curtain or a dirty scoop holder is a food-contact issue, not just a cosmetic one.
Ice machine cleaning and maintenance schedule
| Task | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean and sanitize the water system (Manitowoc) | At least every six months | Manitowoc’s interval; use only Manitowoc-approved cleaner and sanitizer |
| Descale and sanitize (Scotsman) | Every six months, more often with high mineral water | Scotsman Clear 1 and Nu-Calgon IMS; bleach can harm evaporators |
| Clean and sanitize (Hoshizaki) | At least once a year per Hoshizaki cleaning sheets; Hoshizaki guidance recommends twice a year | Hoshizaki Scale Away; vinegar is not recommended |
| Descale (Ice-O-Matic CIM) | At least twice a year, no more than once a month | The clean reminder can be set to 3 months for hard water |
| Clean air filter | Twice a month (Hoshizaki guidance) | Grease and lint cut condenser airflow and production |
| Clean air-cooled condenser | Every six months (Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic); monthly on Follett air-cooled dispensers | A dirty condenser causes long freeze and high pressure faults |
| Check and change water filters | Per filter maker, or when pressure drops | A plugged cartridge causes slow fill codes |
| Clean drain lines and drain pans (dispensers) | Weekly (Follett) | Prevents backups and odor |
| Wash bin interior and scoop | Bin weekly, scoop daily (Hoshizaki guidance) | Ice is food under the Food Code |
Damage from the wrong chemicals, wrong dilution or skipped cleaning can be excluded from manufacturer warranty coverage. Scotsman says so in its cleaning bulletin. Our commercial preventive maintenance plans put ice machine cleaning on a fixed schedule.
Repair or replace your ice machine?
Most ice machine failures are repairable: valves, pumps, sensors, fan motors, boards and auger parts. Repair is usually the right call when the evaporator is in good shape and the refrigeration system holds its charge. Replacement deserves a look when the evaporator plating is pitted or flaking, the compressor has failed on an older machine, or the machine no longer makes enough ice for your volume. If a repair is not worth it, we will tell you, and we can help you size a replacement for production, cube type and the space you have.

Our commercial diagnostic is $129, and it is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. After diagnosis you get a written quote before any work starts. Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.
On a Hoshizaki KM control board, 3 beeps every 3 seconds is the freeze backup timer alarm: the freeze cycle ran over 60 minutes twice in a row. Common causes are a float switch stuck closed, a water or hot gas valve leaking during freeze, a pump that is not running, or a refrigeration problem. The alarm needs a manual reset, but resetting without fixing the cause usually brings it back.
E01 means the freeze cycle reached 60 minutes for 6 consecutive cycles, so the machine shut down on Safety Limit 1. It usually points to a refrigeration issue, a dirty condenser or a valve leaking water during freeze. You can see the code, time and count under Event Log, View ELog on the display.
Manitowoc and Scotsman call for cleaning and sanitizing at least every six months, more often with hard water or heavy use. Ice-O-Matic calls for descaling at least twice a year, and Hoshizaki cleaning sheets require at least once a year. Use only the cleaner your manufacturer approves, since some evaporators are nickel-plated and the wrong chemical can damage them.
