Since January 2024 we have completed 65 GE dryer calls. About one in four was noise or a drum problem, and about one in four was no heat or clothes still damp. Won’t-start calls came next, and on older GE dryers those were often a control knob, timer or switch rather than anything expensive.

1. Squeaking, thumping or grinding
The drum on a GE dryer turns on a belt and rides on supports at the front and back. On many GE models the back of the drum sits on a rear drum bearing instead of rear rollers, and the front rides on glides or rollers. All of these wear:
- Squeak at startup that quiets down. Often the rear drum bearing or the idler pulley.
- Thumping. A worn roller or a flat spot.
- Scraping or marks on clothes. Worn front glides or drum felt.
- Motor runs, drum doesn’t turn. A broken belt. If the motor itself hums and won’t turn, the motor may have failed.
We usually replace worn drum parts as a set, so you are not paying for another visit in a few months.
2. No heat or clothes still damp
- Heating element (electric). The most common heat part we replace on GE dryers. Sometimes the element is fine and a terminal or connection has burned instead; on a March 2026 GE Profile call we repaired the element’s electrical contact.
- Thermal fuse or thermostats. A blown thermal fuse can stop the heat or stop the dryer from starting at all. It blows because the dryer overheated, so we check the vent too.
- Igniter or gas valve coils (gas). The burner doesn’t light or doesn’t stay lit.
- Airflow. Lint inside the dryer and a restricted vent make drying slow and burn out heat parts. The blower housing and wheel are places lint collects that cleaning the lint screen never reaches.

3. Won’t start
On older GE dryers with mechanical controls, a “dead” dryer is often a small part: a broken control knob, a worn timer, or a failed rotary or door switch. On newer models it can be the thermal fuse or the control board. Check the breaker first; an electric dryer needs both legs of its 240V circuit.
From our service log
- October 2024, loud noise. Worn drum support parts. We installed a repair kit; the lint photos above are from the same dryer.
- January 2025, not heating. The heating element had failed. A new element fixed it.
- March 2025, wouldn’t start. A blown fuse. We replaced it.
- September 2025, didn’t turn on. A worn timer, plus a belt and a knob, all on the same older GE dryer.
- May 2026, a squeak the customer heard but we didn’t. We found the wear anyway: the rear drum bearing and the rollers. Both were replaced.

Error codes
Many GE dryers, especially older ones with a timer knob, don’t show codes at all. Newer models can, but the codes vary by model and GE doesn’t publish one list for all of them, so check your owner’s manual. If your dryer shows a code, write it down before you call.
Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Before you call: two quick checks
- Not drying? Clean the lint screen, run the dryer and feel the airflow at the outside vent hood. Weak airflow means the vent needs cleaning.
- Gas dryer with no heat? Make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open. If you smell gas, do not run the dryer; leave and call your gas utility.
Find your GE model number
On most GE dryers the label is inside the door opening or on the back of the cabinet. Write down the full model and serial number before you call; it tells us which drum supports, heating parts and controls your dryer uses.
Still having trouble with your GE dryer? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Repair or replace?
Repair kits, rear bearings, belts, heating elements, thermal fuses, igniters, knobs, timers and switches are almost always worth repairing on a GE dryer. A failed motor or control board on an older unit is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most often the rear drum bearing, the drum rollers or the idler pulley is worn. A squeak that is loud at startup and quiets down is typical. We usually replace the worn drum parts together.
On electric models it is usually the heating element, sometimes a burned terminal, a thermal fuse or a thermostat. On gas models, the igniter or gas valve coils. We also check airflow, because a restricted vent is what burns these parts out.
Often yes. On older GE dryers with a timer knob, a dead dryer is frequently a broken knob, a worn timer, a door or rotary switch, or a thermal fuse, all of which are inexpensive repairs.
Yes. We repair GE and GE Profile electric and gas dryers, including stacked units and washer-dryer combos. Our own 90-day warranty covers parts and labor.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
