Since January 2024 we have completed 176 GE washer calls. About one in five was a spin or agitation problem, and about one in six was a drain problem. The control board was the part we replaced most often, followed by lid and door locks, drive belts and water inlet valves.

1. Won’t spin or won’t agitate
- Lid or door lock. A GE washer won’t spin unless it can lock the lid or door. A lock light that flashes, or a washer that fills and then stops, often points here. Check that nothing is caught in the latch first.
- Drive belt. Many GE washers turn the basket with a belt. A worn or slipping belt gives a washer that fills and hums but barely moves, or one that squeals on spin.
- Control board or motor control. The board decides when to spin; when it fails, the washer can stop at the start of spin or not run at all. On front-loaders a separate inverter board drives the motor.
- Agitator and wash plate on top-loaders: the basket turns but the clothes don’t move.
- Out of balance. Worn suspension rods, springs or shocks let the tub bang, and the washer slows or stops spinning to protect itself.
2. Won’t start or turn on
The most common fix on our GE “won’t start” calls was a new control board. Before that, check the simple things: the outlet and breaker, that the lid or door is fully closed, and that a control lock isn’t on. One May 2025 washer refused to start and insisted the door was open. The door was fine; the control board had failed.
3. Not draining
- The drain hose and the house drain. A kinked hose, a hose pushed too far into the standpipe, or a clogged house drain.
- Something in the pump. Socks and small items get pulled into the drain pump.
- A failed drain pump, or a control board that no longer runs it.
4. Leaking
- Front-loaders, at the door. A torn or dirty door gasket (boot). Replacing it means taking the front of the washer apart.
- Under the washer. A water inlet valve, a fill hose, the drain pump or its hose.
- Not filling, or filling with the wrong temperature. Usually the water inlet valve. On one September 2024 call a GE front-loader kept pausing mid-cycle; a new water inlet valve fixed it.
5. Noise and shaking
- Worn suspension. Banging on spin. In August 2025 a noisy GE top-loader needed all four suspension rod and spring assemblies.
- The drive belt. Squealing or slapping. A June 2025 noise call was a worn belt.
- Motor speed sensor or bearings. A loud roar on spin. A September 2025 call was fixed with a new motor speed sensor.
From our service log
- March 2025, not spinning. The drive belt had worn out. A new belt fixed it.
- May 2025, “door is open” but it wasn’t. The control board had failed; we replaced it.
- September 2024, error and no spin on a front-loader. The inverter board and the main control board both needed replacing.
- Two calls where we recommended against repair. A 9-year-old washer that needed a suspension kit and a belt, and one that needed both a control board and a drain pump. When the repair costs too much for the washer’s age, we tell you.
Error codes
GE washer codes depend on the model and generation, and GE doesn’t publish one list for all of them. If your washer shows a code, look it up in your owner’s manual and write it down before you call. It helps us bring the right part.
Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Find your GE model number
On top-loaders the label is usually under the lid, along the back edge. On front-loaders, look around the door opening. GE washer model numbers usually start with GTW for top-load and GFW for front-load; GE Profile models often start with P.

Repair or replace?
Lid and door locks, belts, water inlet valves, drain pumps, door gaskets, suspension parts and control boards are usually worth repairing on a GE washer. When an older washer needs several expensive parts at once, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
The most common causes we find are a lid or door lock that won't lock, a worn drive belt, a failed control board, or worn suspension that makes the washer stop to protect itself. Check that nothing is caught in the lid or door latch first.
Check the outlet and breaker, make sure the lid or door is fully closed and that a control lock is not on. If it still won't start, the control board is the part we replace most often on GE washers.
Usually a torn or dirty door gasket (boot). Wipe the folds and check for tears. A torn gasket needs to be replaced, which means taking the front of the washer apart.
A single part like a belt, lock, valve or board is usually worth it. When an older washer needs several expensive parts at once, we tell you honestly and give you a repair-versus-replace number before any work.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
