Between January and October 2026 we completed 100 LG refrigerator calls. More than half started as “not cooling” or “stopped working,” and on about one in five the diagnosis was a failed compressor. Ice maker problems were the next most common.

LG compressor problems: what owners should know
Most LG refrigerators made in the last decade use an inverter linear compressor. Instead of a crankshaft, a linear motor drives the piston back and forth. It is quiet and efficient, and it changes speed with demand rather than switching fully on and off.
It also has a track record. In 2020 LG settled a class action over no-cooling complaints on certain French-door and side-by-side models made from 2014 through 2017. LG denied the refrigerators were defective, and that settlement is now closed. In a 2019 Consumer Reports member survey, 8% of LG French-door refrigerators had compressor problems, compared with 3% of refrigerators overall.
Check your warranty before you pay for a compressor. LG’s U.S. limited warranty on many models covers the linear compressor for 10 years from purchase, for parts only; after the first year, labor is on the owner. Terms differ by model and year, so look at your own warranty card and keep the receipt.
Signs your LG compressor may have failed
- Both sections warm. The fridge and the freezer lose temperature together, not one at a time.
- Clicking, then silence. The compressor tries to start every few minutes and shuts off.
- Running nonstop, still warm. The compressor is hot and running, but it is not moving enough refrigerant.
- Sealed-system codes. CH E or CL E (LG: high-side or low-side refrigerant leak), or 22 / 33 (LG: compressor relay problem).

Rule these out before blaming the compressor
- Condenser fan and coils. A stopped condenser fan or a coil packed with dust makes the compressor overheat and shut down. The fridge looks dead, but the compressor is fine.
- Frost on the evaporator. Codes FF, rF or IF point to a fan blocked by frost. The compressor runs, but cold air can’t move.
- Demo mode. OFF on the display means cooling is turned off. LG’s fix: open a refrigerator door, then hold REFRIGERATOR and ICE PLUS together for 5 seconds.
- Control board. On some failures the board stops sending power to the compressor. We test that before quoting a sealed-system repair.

From our service log: a “compressor problem” that wasn’t
In June we were called to an LG refrigerator showing CL E. The compressor was running at 165 °F, which looks like a failing sealed system. The real cause was simple: the condenser fan blade had come off its motor, so nothing was cooling the compressor or the coil. We put the blade back and cleaned the condenser. No compressor, no refrigerant work.
Another call from April went the other way. An LG French-door refrigerator showed CH E, and the owner suspected the compressor. Testing confirmed the compressor had failed, and we replaced it.
How we replace an LG compressor
A compressor replacement is sealed-system work, done by EPA 608-certified technicians. We recover the refrigerant, braze in the new compressor and a new filter drier, pull a deep vacuum, and charge by weight to the amount on the rating label. Most newer LG refrigerators run on R600a; some older models use R134a. Then we check pressures and temperatures before we leave.

Other LG refrigerator problems we fix
- Ice maker not making ice or freezing up. Frost in the ice maker compartment (IF code), a failed ice maker assembly, or a water supply problem.
- Freezer fan or fridge fan codes (FF, rF). Usually frost on the fan, sometimes a failed motor.
- Water on the floor or under the drawers. A frozen defrost drain or a leaking water line.
- Defrost codes (dH, dS). A defrost heater or sensor problem.
LG refrigerator error codes
Codes and meanings below are from LG’s own support documentation. Some codes differ by model, so check your manual too.
| Code | What LG says it means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| CH E | High-side refrigerant leak | Call for service |
| CL E | Low-side refrigerant leak | Call for service |
| 22/ |
Compressor relay problem | Call for service |
| CF | Condenser fan motor fault | Call for service |
| FF/ |
Freezer or fridge fan problem, often frost | Manual defrost: unplug, doors open 8+ hours; if it returns, call |
| IF/ |
Ice maker fan problem or sensor | Manual defrost and check the door gasket; if it returns, call |
| dH | Defrost ran over an hour without reaching temperature | Unplug for 2 minutes and let it defrost again |
| FS/ |
Freezer, fridge or defrost sensor | Call for service |
| CO | Control board and display not communicating | Call for service |
| 67 | Door not closing fully | Check for a gap or something blocking the door |
| gF | Flow sensor or low water pressure | Check the water supply; if it returns, call |
| OFF | Demo mode, cooling off, not a failure | Hold REFRIGERATOR + ICE PLUS for 5 seconds with a door open |

Repair or replace?
Fans, sensors, defrost parts, ice makers and control boards are almost always worth repairing. A compressor replacement costs more, so we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number that takes into account the age of the refrigerator and what your LG warranty still covers. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Typical signs are both sections warming up together, the compressor clicking on and off without starting, or a hot compressor running nonstop while the fridge stays warm. Codes CH E, CL E, 22 or 33 also point to the sealed system. A stopped condenser fan or dusty coils can look the same, so we test those first.
On many models LG's U.S. limited warranty covers the linear compressor for 10 years from purchase, for parts only; labor after the first year is on the owner. Terms vary by model and year, so check your warranty card and keep the receipt.
LG lists CH E as a high-side refrigerant leak and CL E as a low-side refrigerant leak. Both need service. We check the condenser fan and coils first, because an overheating compressor can trigger these codes too.
It depends on the age of the refrigerator and what your LG warranty still covers. On a newer unit with the compressor part covered, a replacement usually makes sense. We give you a written quote and an honest repair-versus-replace number before any work starts.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
