Since January 2024 we have completed 102 Whirlpool dryer calls. About one in three was no heat or clothes still damp, and the heating element was the part we replaced most often. About one in five was noise from the drum: squeaking, thumping or rumbling. A clogged vent or lint inside the dryer was behind more of these calls than people expect.

1. Whirlpool dryer not heating
- Heating element (electric). The most common failed part on our Whirlpool calls. An element that has shorted can also trip the breaker.
- Thermal fuse and thermostats. Depending on the model, a blown thermal fuse either stops the heat or stops the dryer from starting at all. It blows because the dryer overheated, usually from a restricted vent. Replacing the fuse without fixing the airflow means it blows again.
- Igniter or gas valve coils (gas). The burner tries to light but doesn’t stay lit, or doesn’t glow at all.
- Power supply. Electric dryers need both legs of a 240V circuit; with one tripped, the drum turns but there is no heat. Whirlpool’s L2 code means low or no line voltage.
2. Takes too long to dry: airflow
Whirlpool dryers with automatic cycles watch airflow. Whirlpool shows AF (or F4 E3) or lights Check Vent when the lint screen or vent is clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running, but drying takes much longer.
Whirlpool’s own airflow check: run the dryer for 5 to 10 minutes and hold your hand under the outside vent hood. If the airflow is weaker than a hair dryer on high, the vent needs cleaning along its full length. We measure it with an anemometer, and we also check inside the dryer: lint packs around the blower wheel and under the drum, where cleaning the lint screen never reaches.
3. Squeaking, thumping or rumbling
- Drum rollers and idler pulley. Squeaks and rumbles that get louder over time. Rollers, belt and idler come as a repair kit, and we usually replace them together.
- Drum glides or felt seals on front-load models: scraping, or marks on clothes.
- Drum won’t turn. A broken belt, or a motor that has failed. A dryer that won’t start at all can also be the door switch or the thermal fuse.
From our service log
- August 2025, “no heat.” The cause was airflow: the vent lines and the dryer itself were packed with lint and dust. We cleaned the vents and the inside of the dryer.
- June 2026, still no heat after the owner replaced a blown fuse. The heating element had failed; we replaced it and cleaned the motor switch contacts.
- September 2025, a noisy dryer. The idler pulley was full of dirt and grease and barely turned. We cleaned and lubricated the rollers, and the noise stopped without new parts.
- March 2025, tripping the breaker and not heating. A new heating element fixed both problems.
- September 2026, not drying properly. The fix was an airflow cleaning and a new vent duct.
Whirlpool dryer error codes
Codes and meanings below are from Whirlpool’s own support documentation. Not every code appears on every model, so check your manual too. Write the full code down before you call; it helps us bring the right part.
| Code | What Whirlpool says it means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| AF/ |
Restricted airflow: lint screen or vent clogged, crushed, kinked or too many turns | Clean the lint screen and check the vent; touch any key to clear |
| Check Vent | Same airflow problem, shown on models with automatic cycles | Clean the lint screen, the full vent run and the outside hood |
| L2 | Low or no line voltage; heat may not work | Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse and the power cord |
| PF | Power failure interrupted the cycle | Touch and hold Start to restart |
| F# E# | The control found a problem that needs service | Write the code down and call |

Before you call: two quick checks
- Not drying? Clean the lint screen, run the dryer and feel the airflow at the outside vent hood. Weaker than a hair dryer on high means the vent needs cleaning.
- Gas dryer with no heat? Make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open. If you smell gas, do not run the dryer; leave and call your gas utility.
Find your Whirlpool model number
On front-load dryers the label is usually around the door opening; on top-loading Whirlpool dryers, look inside the door or on the back. Whirlpool dryer models usually start with WED for electric and WGD for gas.

Repair or replace?
Heating elements, thermal fuses, thermostats, igniters, gas valve coils, repair kits, door switches and belts are almost always worth repairing on a Whirlpool dryer. A failed motor or control board on an older unit is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
On electric models the most common cause is a failed heating element, followed by a thermal fuse or thermostat, or a tripped leg of the 240V circuit. On gas models, the igniter or gas valve coils. A restricted vent is what usually burns these parts out, so we check airflow on every no-heat call.
Whirlpool says it means restricted airflow: the lint screen or vent is clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running but takes longer. Clean the lint screen, the full vent run and the outside vent hood.
A thermal fuse blows when the dryer overheats, usually because of a restricted vent or lint inside the dryer. Until the airflow problem is fixed, a new fuse will keep blowing.
Usually worn or dirty drum rollers or the idler pulley. Sometimes cleaning and lubricating them is enough; more often we replace rollers, belt and idler together as a repair kit.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
