Since January 2024 we have completed 128 Whirlpool washer calls. About one in four was a drain problem: water left in the drum or an F9 E1 code. Noise, spin and agitation problems came next, then leaks. Control boards, drain pumps and drive parts were the repairs we made most often.

1. Not draining: F9 E1 and drn
Whirlpool shows F9 E1 when draining takes longer than about 8 minutes; many top-loaders show drn. The display often flashes F9 and E1 one after the other. Causes we find, in the order we check them:
- The drain hose and standpipe. Whirlpool says the hose should not be kinked or clogged, should use the U-shaped hose form, and the standpipe should be 39 to 96 inches high. A hose pushed too far down the standpipe can siphon or back up.
- Too many suds. Regular detergent in an HE washer slows draining. Whirlpool’s fix is HE detergent only.
- A clogged drain pump filter on front-loaders. Socks, coins and lint collect behind the small cover at the bottom front.
- A failed drain pump, or on some models a control board that no longer runs it.

2. Won’t spin or won’t agitate
- Lid or door lock. A Whirlpool washer will not spin unless the lid or door locks. Whirlpool’s codes: LdL (lid not locking) on top-loaders and F5 E2 (door not locking) on front-loaders. Check for laundry or detergent buildup around the latch first.
- Out of balance (OFb) or overloaded (OL). The washer slows or stops to protect itself. Redistribute or remove part of the load and restart.
- A broken drive coupler on many older direct-drive top-loaders. It is a plastic link between the motor and the transmission, built to break before something more expensive does. The motor hums or runs, but the basket doesn’t move.
- The drive motor or motor control. F7 E1 is Whirlpool’s motor speed sensing error; first make sure the shipping bolts were removed and the washer isn’t overloaded.

3. Noise, banging or shaking
- The washer isn’t level. The simplest fix, and the first thing we check. A January 2024 “noisy washer” call was solved by leveling it.
- Worn suspension rods on top-loaders, or shocks and springs on front-loaders. The tub bangs against the cabinet on spin.
- Gear case or wash plate on top-loaders: grinding or clunking during agitation.
- Tub bearings and the drum spider on front-loaders: a loud roar on spin that gets worse over time.

4. Leaking or smelling musty
- Front-loaders, in front of the door. A torn or dirty door gasket. Mold in the gasket folds also causes most of the musty smell.
- Under the washer. A loose or cracked fill hose, a leaking water inlet valve, or the drain pump.
- Not filling: F8 E1, LF or Lo FL. Whirlpool’s first step is to make sure both hot and cold faucets are fully open and the hoses aren’t kinked. HC means the hot and cold hoses are swapped.

From our service log
- January 2025, Cabrio with F9 E1. Water stayed in the drum. The drain pump had failed, and replacing it fixed the drain.
- August 2024, F7 E1. The motor speed error kept coming back. The drive motor had failed; we replaced the motor and its cover.
- May 2025, stacked washer with a musty, dirty gasket. We replaced the door bellow (gasket).
- March 2025, grinding during agitation. We replaced the gear case and the wash plate.
Whirlpool washer error codes
Codes and meanings below are from Whirlpool’s own support documentation. Not every code appears on every model, so check your manual too.

Repair or replace?
Drain pumps, couplers, lid locks and switches, door gaskets, inlet valves, suspension rods and control boards are almost always worth repairing on a Whirlpool washer. Failed tub bearings on an older front-loader, or a failed transmission on an older top-loader, is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Whirlpool says F9 E1 means draining took longer than about 8 minutes. Check the drain hose for kinks or clogs and use HE detergent only. On front-loaders, clean the drain pump filter. If the code comes back, the drain pump usually needs service.
On many older top-loaders the plastic drive coupler between the motor and transmission has broken. It is designed to fail first and is an inexpensive repair. On newer models, check for a lid or door lock problem or a motor error.
The washer cannot lock the lid. Whirlpool says to check for items under the lid and detergent buildup around the lock. If the lid is clear and it still will not lock, the lid lock assembly needs replacing.
On top-loaders, Whirlpool says to press Start/Pause once to clear the code and again to restart. On front-loaders, unplug the washer for 5 minutes. If the same code returns, the washer needs service.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
