Since January 2024 we have completed 204 Whirlpool refrigerator calls. More than a third started with “not cooling” or “stopped working.” About one in four was an ice maker problem, and about one in eight was a leak. When we look at what actually fixed them, a few causes come up again and again: frost on the evaporator, a failed fan, a control board, and the ice maker itself.

1. Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling
“Not cooling” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. On Whirlpool refrigerators it usually comes down to one of these, and we check them in this order:
- Frost on the evaporator. If the defrost heater, its thermostat or the drain fails, ice builds up on the coil behind the freezer panel until air can’t pass. The freezer may still be cold while the fridge warms up.
- Evaporator or condenser fan. A fan that stops, or a blade frozen into ice, means cold air isn’t moved. A dusty condenser coil under the fridge makes everything work harder.
- Control board. On many newer Whirlpool models the main board runs the fans, defrost and compressor. When it fails, the fridge can look dead or cool erratically.
- Compressor start relay. The compressor clicks but doesn’t start. A relay is a small, inexpensive part compared with the compressor.
- Sealed system. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor. Less common, and the most expensive repair, so we rule out everything above first.

Check these first. Whirlpool recommends setting the fresh-food section to 37–40 °F and giving any change 24 hours to settle. Make sure the vents inside aren’t blocked by food. If the lights work but nothing cools at all, the fridge may be in demo or showroom mode: some models show “Demo,” “Showroom” or “Shwrm,” and the exit steps are in your owner’s manual.
2. Ice maker not making ice
The second most common Whirlpool call. What we check, in order:
- Water supply. If the water dispenser works, the supply line is usually fine. A clogged filter or a failing water inlet valve can still starve the ice maker.
- Freezer temperature. The ice maker needs a cold enough freezer. If ice is melting in the bucket, it’s a cooling problem, not an ice maker problem.
- The ice maker assembly. Motors, sensors and the ejector wear out. Replacing the assembly is a common, straightforward repair.
- The auger motor. If ice is made but won’t dispense, the auger motor that pushes ice to the chute may have failed.
3. Water leaking
- Inside, under the crisper drawers. A frozen or clogged defrost drain. The water from defrosting has nowhere to go.
- On the floor behind or under the fridge. A leaking water inlet valve or a cracked water line to the ice maker.
- From the dispenser area. The dispenser, its tubing, or a filter housing that isn’t sealed.
From our service log
- August 2025, freezer stopped freezing. The defrost heater had shorted out under built-up ice. It took a complete defrost, cleaning the wiring harness and clearing a clogged drain line to get it right.
- June 2025, a garage refrigerator stopped cooling. The evaporator fan had failed. We replaced it and the fridge cooled again.
- January 2025, ice melting in the bucket. The owner thought it was the ice maker. The compressor wasn’t starting reliably; a new start relay fixed it.
- July 2025, “not cooling.” The fresh-food side was warm. The fix was cleaning the condenser coil; no parts were needed.
Garage refrigerators in Colorado
Many Denver homes have a second fridge in the garage. Standard refrigerators are designed for indoor room temperatures, and a garage that drops well below freezing in winter or bakes in summer pushes them outside that range. In winter the freezer can warm up because the fridge thinks it’s cold enough; in summer the compressor runs constantly. Your owner’s manual lists the room-temperature range your model is built for.
Flashing “F” or an error code
Whirlpool’s own guidance for a flashing F code on the display is a reset: turn off the breaker or unplug the refrigerator for one minute, power it back on, make sure cooling is on, and watch for a minute. If the code comes back, the refrigerator needs service. Write the full code down before you call; it helps us bring the right part.

Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Find your Whirlpool model number
On most Whirlpool refrigerators the label is inside the fresh-food section, on a side wall or the ceiling near the top. Whirlpool refrigerator models usually start with WR: for example WRF for French-door, WRS for side-by-side and WRT for top-freezer.

Repair or replace?
Fans, defrost parts, ice makers, inlet valves, start relays and control boards are almost always worth repairing on a Whirlpool refrigerator. A failed compressor or refrigerant leak on an older unit is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually frost on the evaporator or a failed evaporator fan. Cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge; when frost or a stopped fan blocks that airflow, the fridge warms up first. A defrost heater, its thermostat or a clogged drain is often behind the frost.
If the water dispenser works, check the water filter and the freezer temperature first. If ice melts in the bucket, it is a cooling problem. Otherwise the ice maker assembly or the water inlet valve usually needs replacing.
Whirlpool recommends turning off the breaker or unplugging the refrigerator for one minute, powering it back on, making sure cooling is on and watching it for a minute. If the code returns, the refrigerator needs service.
Standard refrigerators are built for indoor room temperatures. In a cold Colorado garage the freezer can warm up, and in summer heat the compressor runs nonstop. Check the room-temperature range in your owner manual before relying on a garage fridge.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
