Since January 2024 we have completed about 170 GE dishwasher calls. About one in five was a drain problem, and about one in seven was a leak. The part we replaced most often was a control board (the main board or the user interface board on the door), followed by drain pumps, circulation pumps, water inlet valves and water pressure sensors.

1. Not draining (Ftd, C1, C3)
Water left in the bottom of the tub is the most common GE dishwasher call we get. GE’s own list of codes includes Ftd (failure to drain) and C3 (will not drain). The cause is usually one of these:
- The filter and sump. Food and labels collect under the lower spray arm and slow the drain down.
- The drain hose, air gap or disposer. A kinked hose, a clogged air gap, or a new garbage disposer whose knockout plug was never removed.
- The drain pump. A jammed or failed drain pump is the most common drain part we replace on GE dishwashers.
- A check valve or the control board, less often.

2. H2O code or not filling with water
GE describes H2O as a low water situation. Start with the simple things: the water supply valve under the sink is fully open and the inlet hose isn’t kinked. If those are fine, the usual causes are:
- The water pressure sensor. On several H2O calls we cleaned or replaced the pressure sensor that tells the control how much water is in the tub. GE’s PrS code points to this sensor or its wiring.
- The water inlet valve. It can fail closed (no water) or leak.
- Water pressure in the house. On one January 2026 call a portable GE dishwasher had a new inlet valve, and the follow-up showed air in the supply line from a pressure drop while filling.
Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
3. Dishes not clean
- Filter and spray arms. A dirty filter or blocked spray arm holes are the first things we check.
- The circulation pump. It pushes water through the spray arms. When it fails the dishwasher fills and drains but barely washes, and it can get loud or leak.
- Water temperature. GE’s C6 code means the water is too cold; GE recommends incoming water of at least 120°F. Running the kitchen tap until it’s hot before starting helps.
- A loose or broken lower spray arm. In August 2026 a GE lower spray arm came off and burned on the heating element.

4. Won’t turn on
Check the breaker, the outlet or junction box, that the door is fully latched, and that the control lock isn’t on. After that, the most common fix on our GE “dead dishwasher” calls was a control board. Sometimes it’s the user interface board in the door, sometimes the main board under the tub. We test before we replace, because the two can look the same from the outside.

5. Leaking
- Water inlet valve. The valve under the front of the dishwasher. We replaced several that were dripping onto the floor.
- Pump hoses and housings. The circulation pump hose and the pump housing seals.
- Diverter assembly. On two March 2025 calls, leaking GE dishwashers needed a new diverter assembly.
- Door gasket and leveling. A worn gasket, weak door springs, or a dishwasher that isn’t level lets water out at the door.
6. Not drying or tripping the breaker
On GE dishwashers that stopped drying, we found either a failed heating element or a control board that no longer sent power to it. A dishwasher that trips the breaker can have a failed heating element; that was the fix on a January 2026 GE Profile call. Rinse aid helps drying, so keep the dispenser full.
From our service log
- January 2025, door and leveling. Worn door springs, and the dishwasher wasn’t level. We replaced the springs and leveled it.
- September 2025, not draining. We replaced the drain hose, the drain pump and the check valve.
- October 2025, H2O and very long cycles. A new water pressure sensor fixed it.
- January 2026, GE Profile tripping the breaker. The heating element had failed; a new element fixed it.
- June 2026, not drying and washing poorly. The control board wasn’t sending power to the heating element. A new board fixed it.
GE dishwasher error codes
From GE Appliances’ published list. Not every code appears on every model; check your owner’s manual for yours.
| Code | What GE says it means |
|---|---|
| Ftd / |
Failure to drain. Check the drain hose, air gap and disposer. |
| C1 | Pump out during drain took longer than 2 minutes. |
| C2 | Total pump out time was longer than 7 minutes. |
| C3 | The dishwasher will not drain. |
| C4 | Filled twice after a power failure. |
| C5 | Pump out time too short. |
| C6 | Water temperature too low (GE recommends at least 120°F). |
| C7 | Water temperature sensor circuit not working. |
| C8 | Detergent cup blocked from opening fully. |
| H2O | Low water. |
| PrS | Pressure sensor sending an invalid signal. |
| PF | There was a power failure. |
| 999 / |
Possible leak, on models with leak detection. |
A number followed by H (like 2H) is not an error: the dishwasher is in Delay Start.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Not draining? Clean the filter under the lower spray arm, and check the air gap on the sink and the hose to the disposer.
- Not cleaning? Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot, then start the dishwasher.
- Dead? Check the breaker, and make sure the door is fully latched.
Find your GE model number
GE puts the model and serial tag on the left or right front inside edge of the tub, or on the right side edge of the door. Open the door and look along the edges. Write down the full model and serial number before you call; it tells us which pump, board and valve your dishwasher uses.
Still having trouble with your GE dishwasher? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Repair or replace?
Drain pumps, inlet valves, pressure sensors, spray arms, door springs, gaskets and most control boards are usually worth repairing on a GE dishwasher. When an older dishwasher needs a circulation pump and a board at the same time, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most often a clogged filter or sump, a kinked drain hose, a blocked air gap or disposer connection, or a jammed or failed drain pump. Clean the filter and check the hose and air gap first. If it still holds water, the drain pump is the part we replace most often.
GE describes H2O as a low water situation. Make sure the water supply valve is open and the inlet hose isn't kinked. If the code keeps coming back, the usual causes are the water pressure sensor or the water inlet valve.
Check the breaker, make sure the door is fully latched and the control lock is off. If it is still dead, the most common fix on our calls is a control board, either the user interface board in the door or the main board.
Under the dishwasher, the usual causes are the water inlet valve, a pump hose or housing, or the diverter. At the door, a worn gasket, weak door springs or a dishwasher that isn't level.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
