Since January 2024 we have completed about 120 Kenmore refrigerator calls. Almost half were “not cooling” or “freezer not freezing.” About one in six was an ice maker problem, and about one in six was a leak. More than ten of those calls involved the compressor or its start relay.

Who built your Kenmore?
Kenmore is Sears’ brand, and its refrigerators were built by other manufacturers, mainly Whirlpool, LG and Electrolux (Frigidaire), and the parts inside match the maker. The three digits before the period in a Kenmore model number, like 106., 253. or 795., are the source code for the manufacturer.
This matters for the repair. On our own Kenmore calls we have installed Whirlpool ice maker modules and water valves, Frigidaire evaporator fans and defrost heaters, and LG compressors, fan motors and control parts. Knowing who built your Kenmore lets us bring the right part the first time.
1. Not cooling
- Compressor or its start relay. A compressor that clicks on and off, or a fridge that’s warm while the compressor is silent. Sometimes it’s only the start relay or capacitor, an inexpensive part. When the compressor itself has failed, we replace it, recharge the system and confirm temperatures.
- Refrigerant leak. A fridge that slowly loses cooling over weeks. We find the leak, repair it and recharge.
- Fans. The evaporator fan moves cold air from the freezer into the fresh food section; the condenser fan cools the compressor. A noisy or stopped fan is a common reason the freezer works but the fridge doesn’t.
- Control board, thermistors or a stuck damper. Less often, but we test them before replacing anything bigger.

2. Frost on the back wall, freezer warming up
If the freezer gets warm and you see frost building up on the back wall, the defrost system has usually failed. The coil ices over, air can’t pass, and both sections warm up. The cause is a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat or sensor, or the control that runs the defrost cycle. A clogged defrost drain does something similar: water refreezes in the bottom of the freezer.
3. Ice maker not making ice
- Water inlet valve. No water reaches the ice maker. One of the parts we replace most often on Kenmore ice maker calls.
- Ice maker module. The motor and control that fill, freeze and eject.
- A frozen fill tube. On one 2026 call the fill tube had been installed incorrectly and kept freezing.
- Water filter. A clogged or wrong filter slows the water down.

4. Leaking water
- Water line or dispenser tubing. A cracked line behind the fridge or inside the door. On one 2024 call a mouse had chewed through the water line.
- Clogged defrost drain. Water collects under the crisper drawers or freezes on the freezer floor.
- Water filter housing or inlet valve. Drips under the front of the fridge.
From our service log
- March 2024, not cooling. After checking the control boards, the inverter board turned out to be the failed part.
- August 2024, not cooling. A failed evaporator fan and a worn freezer door gasket, both on Frigidaire part numbers.
- January 2025 and December 2025, not cooling. Both times the compressor’s start relay and capacitor had failed; a new relay fixed it without touching the compressor.
- September 2025, defrost not working. The defrost heater tested fine, but the defrost fuse had burned out.
- December 2025, not cooling. The compressor had failed; we replaced it and recharged the system.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the temperature settings and make sure the vents inside the fridge and freezer aren’t blocked by food.
- Clean the condenser coils under or behind the fridge. Dust makes the compressor work harder.
- Listen. If the fridge is warm and you hear nothing at all from the back, or a click every few minutes, tell us when you call.
Find your Kenmore model number
The model number starts with three digits and a period. According to Sears PartsDirect, the label is usually inside the fresh food section on the upper side wall, on the ceiling, on the frame behind the crisper drawers, or inside the freezer on some models. The model and serial number are usually on the same label. Send us the full model number and we will know which manufacturer’s parts your Kenmore uses.

Repair or replace?
Fans, relays, defrost parts, valves, ice makers, thermistors and most boards are usually worth repairing on a Kenmore refrigerator. A compressor or sealed system repair costs more, and on a 15-year-old fridge we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number first. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kenmore refrigerators were built for Sears by other manufacturers, mainly Whirlpool, LG and Electrolux (Frigidaire). The three digits before the period in the model number identify the maker. We use them to order the right parts.
Usually the evaporator fan has stopped, the coil has frosted over because the defrost system failed, or an air damper is stuck. All of these are repairable.
Sometimes it isn't the compressor at all, just the start relay and capacitor, which is an inexpensive repair. If the compressor has failed, we give you a written quote and an honest repair-versus-replace number based on the fridge's age before any work starts.
The most common causes are a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a clogged water filter or a failed ice maker module. Check that the ice maker is switched on and the filter isn't overdue first.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
