Since January 2024 we have completed about 85 KitchenAid dishwasher calls. About one in five came in with an error code, about one in six was a drain problem, and about one in seven was a leak. The parts we replaced most often were the circulation pump (wash motor), drain pumps, spray arms, filters, diverter motors and control boards.

KitchenAid is part of Whirlpool, and KitchenAid dishwashers share their platform and many parts with Whirlpool and Maytag dishwashers. What sets most KitchenAid models apart is a stainless tub, a heavier door, and a removable cylindrical filter that needs regular cleaning.
1. Dishes not clean, or the wash motor stops
The circulation pump, which KitchenAid also calls the wash motor, pushes water through the spray arms. When it fails, the dishwasher fills and drains but barely washes, often with an error code. On several of our 2026 calls the display showed F7E1, and on most of them the wash motor had failed. KitchenAid’s own list includes F7E2, a wash motor error.
- Filter. The cylindrical filter in the bottom of the tub twists out. A clogged filter starves the pump; in January 2026 we replaced the filter on a KitchenAid.
- Spray arms. A cracked or broken arm loses pressure. In October 2026 a broken spray arm was why dishes weren’t getting clean.
- Diverter motor. It sends water to the upper or lower arms; when it fails, one rack stays dirty.

2. Not draining (F9E1, F9E2)
KitchenAid lists F9E1 as a long drain and F9E2 as a drain motor error. Start with the filter, the drain hose, the disposer and the air gap. After that, the drain pump: several of ours were simply clogged and cleaned out; others needed replacing.

3. Leaking (F8E4)
Many KitchenAid dishwashers have a drip tray with a float switch, and KitchenAid lists F8E4 as water detected in the drip tray. The water itself usually comes from a pump seal, a hose, the water inlet valve, a float switch, or the diverter; in June 2025 a leaking KitchenAid needed a new float switch, and in August 2026 another needed a new diverter motor. Using dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent also causes leaks at the door.

4. Won’t start, stops or trips the breaker
- Door latch. The dishwasher won’t run if the door doesn’t latch.
- Control board. In July 2025 and February 2026 KitchenAid dishwashers needed new control boards. KitchenAid lists F6E1 as a user interface or main control error.
- Heating element. A shorted element can trip the breaker. KitchenAid lists F4E3 as a heating error.
- Wiring. In June 2026 a KitchenAid that kept turning off had burnt wiring.

KitchenAid dishwasher codes
From KitchenAid’s published list. Codes vary by model; check your manual for yours.
| Code | What KitchenAid says it means |
|---|---|
| F9 E1 | Long drain, not draining. |
| F9 E2 | Drain motor error. |
| F8 E4 | Water detected in the drip tray. |
| F7 E2 | Wash motor error. |
| F6 E1 | User interface error, main control. |
| F4 E3 | Heating error. |

On models without a display, the Clean light flashes the code: count the first set of flashes (the F number), then after a short pause the second set (the E number).

Repair or replace?
KitchenAid dishwashers are built to last, and circulation pumps, drain pumps, diverters, spray arms, filters, floats and control boards are almost always worth repairing. When an older unit needs a pump and a board at the same time, or has water damage underneath, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clean the cylindrical filter first. If dishes are still dirty, the most common causes are a failed circulation pump (wash motor), a broken spray arm or a failed diverter motor.
KitchenAid lists F9E1 as a long drain. Clean the filter and check the drain hose, disposer and air gap. If it still won't drain, the drain pump may need cleaning or replacing.
Common causes are a pump seal, a hose, the water inlet valve, the float switch or the diverter, or dish soap used instead of dishwasher detergent. On many models, F8E4 means water has reached the drip tray.
KitchenAid is part of Whirlpool, and many KitchenAid dishwasher parts are shared with Whirlpool and Maytag models, which keeps them easy to get.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
