Since January 2024 we have completed about 95 Whirlpool dishwasher calls. About one in five involved the circulation pump, the part we replaced most often by far. About one in six was a leak and about one in six a drain problem. Heating elements, spray arms, water inlet valves and control boards followed.

Whirlpool also makes KitchenAid and Maytag dishwashers, and many Kenmore ones, so a lot of what’s below applies to them too.
1. Not cleaning, or starts and then stops
On Whirlpool dishwashers this is usually the circulation pump, the motor that pushes water through the spray arms. When it fails, the dishwasher fills, hums or sits quietly, and the dishes come out dirty; some stop mid-cycle or never finish. A new circulation pump fixed many of our Whirlpool calls described as “not washing,” “top rack not clean” or “won’t complete the cycle.”
- Filter. Whirlpool’s filter sits under the lower spray arm and needs cleaning. In August 2026 a dishwasher that “wasn’t washing well enough” had a clogged filter.
- Spray arms. Cracked or blocked arms spray poorly or send water at the door.
- Diverter motor. On some models it switches water between the arms; in March 2024 a Gold Series needed one along with a circulation pump.
2. Not draining (F9 E1, F9 E2)
Whirlpool lists F9 E1 as a long drain and F9 E2 as a drain motor error. Before anything else:
- Clean the filter and the sump under it.
- Check the drain hose for kinks, and the disposer and air gap for clogs. On a new disposer, the knockout plug must be removed.
Several of our Whirlpool drain calls were fixed simply by cleaning out the drain hose. If the hose and filter are clear, the drain pump is next.

3. Leaking (F8 E4)
Many Whirlpool dishwashers have a drip tray with a float switch underneath. Whirlpool lists F8 E4 as water detected in the drip tray. The leak itself is usually one of these:
- Water inlet valve. In August 2025 a dripping inlet valve had to be replaced.
- Spray arms. Damaged arms throw water at the door seal. On several leak calls we replaced the spray arms.
- Door gasket and leveling. A worn gasket, or a dishwasher that isn’t level, leaks at the door. Whirlpool also lists leveling as the fix for F6 E4 (water float switch).
- Dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent. The suds push water out of the door.
- Heating element and pump seals. In March 2024 the leak was at the heating element’s rubber seal.
4. Not filling (H20)
Whirlpool’s H20 means it isn’t detecting water. Check that the supply valve under the sink is open and the hose isn’t kinked. If both are fine, the water inlet valve is the usual cause; we replaced it on two October 2025 calls where the dishwasher wouldn’t fill.
5. Not drying, or tripping the breaker
A failed heating element stops drying, and a shorted one can trip the breaker. Sometimes the element is fine and the control board isn’t powering it. In December 2025 a Whirlpool that tripped the breaker needed both; in September 2026 a dishwasher that wasn’t drying, showing F7 E1, got a new heating element and control board.
From our service log
- March 2024, Gold Series not washing. It needed a diverter motor and a circulation pump.
- June 2024, not completing the cycle. A new circulation pump fixed it.
- December 2024, not draining. The drain hose was clogged; cleaning it fixed the problem.
- October 2025, not filling. The water inlet valve had failed and was replaced.
- December 2025, tripping the breaker. The heating element and control board both needed replacing.
Whirlpool dishwasher error codes
From Whirlpool’s published list. Codes vary by model, so check your manual too.
| Code | What Whirlpool says it means |
|---|---|
| F9 E1 | Long drain, not draining. |
| F9 E2 | Drain motor error. |
| F8 E4 | Water detected in the drip tray. |
| F8 E2 | Fill valve electrical error. |
| F7 E2 | Wash motor error. |
| F6 E4 | Water float switch; often a dishwasher that isn’t level. |
| F6 E1 | User interface error, main control. |
| H20 | Not detecting water. |
On models without a display, the Clean light flashes the code: count the first set of flashes (the F number), then after a short pause the second set (the E number). Seven flashes, a pause, then one flash is F7 E1.
Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Clean the filter under the lower spray arm.
- Reset the power. Whirlpool recommends unplugging the dishwasher, or turning off its breaker, for 30 seconds.
- Use dishwasher detergent only, never dish soap.
Find your Whirlpool model number
Whirlpool puts the model and serial number on the tub frame: open the door and look along the edge of the tub opening. Whirlpool dishwasher models usually start with WDT, WDF or WDTA.

Repair or replace?
Circulation pumps, drain pumps, inlet valves, spray arms, heating elements, door gaskets and rack parts are almost always worth repairing on a Whirlpool dishwasher. When an older unit has water damage underneath or needs several big parts, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clean the filter under the lower spray arm first. If the dishes are still dirty, the circulation pump is the most common cause on Whirlpool dishwashers, followed by blocked or cracked spray arms.
Whirlpool lists F9 E1 as a long drain. Clean the filter, check the drain hose for kinks, and check the disposer and air gap. If it still won't drain, the drain pump may need replacing.
Common causes are a leaking water inlet valve, damaged spray arms, a worn door gasket, a dishwasher that isn't level, or dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent. On many models, F8 E4 means water has reached the drip tray.
Yes. Whirlpool makes KitchenAid and Maytag dishwashers, and many Kenmore models, so they share most parts and repairs.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
