Since January 2024 we have completed about 120 KitchenAid refrigerator calls. About one in four was an ice maker problem, and about one in four was “not cooling.” Leaks and noise came next. The part we replaced most often was a control board, followed by ice makers, water valves, thermistors, fans and dampers.

KitchenAid is part of Whirlpool, and most KitchenAid refrigerators share many parts with Whirlpool models. Built-in KitchenAid units (36, 42 and 48 inch, often with custom panels) are a different design, and we service those too.
1. Not cooling
- Control board. The most common part we replace on KitchenAid refrigerators. A board can fail after a power outage or a surge; in December 2025 a KitchenAid stopped working after an outage and needed a new control board.
- Air damper. On many KitchenAid models, cold air from the freezer reaches the fresh food section through a motorized damper. When it sticks, the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms up.
- Evaporator fan. A fan that stops, or one hitting ice, means no airflow.
- Compressor, start relay or sealed system. If the compressor doesn’t run, sometimes it’s only the start relay and capacitor. If it has failed or refrigerant has leaked, we repair the sealed system.

2. Ice building up, freezer warming
Frost on the back wall, ice in the bottom of the fridge, or a freezer that slowly warms up usually means the defrost system has failed: a defrost heater, a thermostat or thermistor, or the control. When the coil ices over, air can’t pass and the fan may hit the ice and get noisy. A clogged defrost drain makes water collect and freeze on the floor of the compartment.

3. Ice maker not working
- Water inlet valve or fill tube. No water reaches the ice maker, or the fill tube freezes.
- Ice maker assembly. The motor and controls that fill, freeze and eject. In September 2026 an ice maker showing an E5 code needed a new assembly.
- Ice maker control board. In February 2025 an ice maker that stopped making ice needed a new control board.
- Not cold enough. An iced-over evaporator can leave the ice maker too warm to make ice.

4. Leaking water
- Clogged defrost drain. The most common leak we see: water runs into the crisper drawers or onto the floor. We clear the drain and the hose behind it.
- Water valve and lines. A leaking inlet valve or a cracked line to the ice maker or dispenser.
- Ice maker. A faulty ice maker can overfill and leak.
From our service log
- November 2024, stopped cooling after a weird noise. The control boards had failed and needed replacing.
- December 2024, panel-ready fridge not cooling. A stuck air damper; we replaced it.
- June 2025, leaking. A new water valve fixed it.
- December 2025, dead after a power outage. A new control board brought it back.
- June 2026, compressor not running. The start relay and capacitor had failed; we replaced them.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the settings and vents. Make sure the temperature wasn’t changed and food isn’t blocking the vents.
- Clean the condenser coils at the bottom front or behind the fridge. On most built-ins, they are at the top behind the grille.
- Reset it. Unplug the fridge or turn off its breaker for a few minutes; on one June 2025 call that brought a stuck dispenser back.
Find your KitchenAid model number
According to KitchenAid, on French door, bottom-freezer and top-freezer models the tag is inside the fresh food section on the left side; on side-by-side models it’s inside the fresh food section on the right side. Write down the full model number before you call.

Repair or replace?
Control boards, ice makers, valves, fans, dampers, thermistors and defrost parts are almost always worth repairing on a KitchenAid refrigerator, especially a built-in. A compressor or sealed system repair costs more, and on an older freestanding fridge we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number first. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Usually the water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, the ice maker assembly or its control board. An iced-over evaporator can also keep the freezer too warm to make ice.
Most often a clogged defrost drain, which sends water into the drawers or onto the floor. A leaking water valve, a cracked water line or a faulty ice maker are the other common causes.
