Since January 2024 we have completed about 130 Maytag dryer calls. About two in five were noise or belt problems, and about one in four was no heat or clothes still damp. The repairs we did most often were a drum repair kit (rollers, idler pulley and belt) and a new heating element.

Maytag is part of Whirlpool, and today’s Maytag dryers share their design and most parts with Whirlpool dryers. That’s good news for repairs: parts are easy to get, so most repairs are quick.
1. Squealing, thumping or screeching
The drum turns on a belt, guided by an idler pulley, and rides on rollers. When those wear, you hear it:
- Squeal or screech. Usually the idler pulley or the drum rollers.
- Thump on every turn. A roller with a flat spot, or a loose baffle inside the drum. In December 2025 a “noisy” Maytag simply had a loose baffle.
- Rumble or roar. The blower wheel, or a worn drum bearing on front-load models.
- Motor runs, drum doesn’t turn. A broken belt, or occasionally the motor.
We usually replace the worn parts together as a repair kit: rollers, idler pulley and belt. It costs less than coming back for each part separately.
2. No heat or takes too long to dry
- Heating element (electric). The most common heat part we replace on Maytag dryers.
- Thermal cut-off fuse or thermostats. In February 2026 a Maytag stopped heating because the thermal cut-off fuse had blown. These parts protect the dryer from overheating, so when they fail we check the airflow too.
- Igniter or gas valve coils (gas). The burner doesn’t light or goes out.
- Airflow. A clogged vent or lint inside the dryer makes drying slow and burns out heating elements. Maytag’s AF code means restricted airflow.
3. Lint inside the dryer
Cleaning the lint screen doesn’t reach the exhaust duct and blower inside the cabinet. On older dryers we often find them packed solid, which slows drying, makes noise and is a fire risk. We clean the inside of the dryer on most repairs, and we also offer dryer vent cleaning.
4. Won’t start, won’t stop, or won’t tumble
- Power first. An electric dryer needs both breakers of its 240V circuit. In June 2026 a “dead” Maytag only needed its breaker turned back on.
- Door switch or thermal fuse. A failed door switch or blown thermal fuse stops the dryer from starting.
- Timer, knob or control board. In June 2025 a Maytag that wouldn’t shut off needed a new timer. Broken knobs and a push-in start button are common on older models.
- Belt or motor. If the dryer hums or runs but the drum doesn’t move.
From our service log
- August 2024, making noise. We replaced the idler pulley and the roller kit.
- December 2024, gas Maytag not heating. Gas valve coils and the igniter, plus a belt and idler pulley, were replaced.
- June 2025, wouldn’t shut off. A new timer fixed it.
- February 2026, not heating. The thermal cut-off fuse had blown; we replaced it.
- June 2026, drum not moving. A new belt and drive motor.
Maytag dryer codes
From Maytag’s published list. For other codes, check your owner’s manual.
| Code | What Maytag says it means |
|---|---|
| AF / |
Restricted airflow: clogged lint screen, or a vent that’s clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns. |
| L2 | Low or no line voltage, so the heater may not turn on. Check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse. |
| PF | A power failure interrupted the cycle. |
| F# E# | The control has detected a problem that needs service. |

Before you call: three quick checks
- Clean the lint screen, run the dryer and feel the airflow at the outside vent hood. Weak airflow means the vent needs cleaning.
- Check the breakers. An electric dryer uses two; if one is off, the dryer may run without heat.
- Gas dryer with no heat? Make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open. If you smell gas, don’t run the dryer; leave and call your gas utility.
Find your Maytag model number
Maytag puts the model and serial tag inside the dryer door, on the rim of the opening. Maytag electric dryer models usually start with MED and gas models with MGD. Write down the full model number before you call.

Repair or replace?
Repair kits, belts, heating elements, fuses, thermostats, igniters, door switches, timers and knobs are almost always worth repairing on a Maytag dryer. A failed motor or control board on an older unit is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most often the idler pulley or the drum rollers are worn. We usually replace them together with the belt as a repair kit, which fixes the noise and avoids another visit later.
On electric models, usually the heating element, a thermal cut-off fuse or a thermostat, or one breaker of the 240V circuit is off. On gas models, the igniter or gas valve coils. A clogged vent is often what burned the part out, so we check airflow too.
Maytag says AF (or F4 E3) means restricted airflow: a clogged lint screen, or a vent that is clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns. Clean the lint screen and check the vent.
Maytag is part of Whirlpool, and current Maytag dryers share most parts with Whirlpool dryers. That makes parts easy to get, so most repairs are quick.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
