True refrigeration is a regular part of our work. Our technicians, with more than 30 years of combined experience and over 10,000 appliance repairs behind the company, service True Residential units in homes and True commercial reach-ins, prep coolers and freezers in restaurants, offices and garages across the Denver metro. Because both lines come from the same manufacturer and share the same approach to condensers, fans, gaskets and hinges, the experience carries over directly.
True Residential products and series we repair
True model numbers are easy to read once you know the pattern. In TWC-24DZ-L-SG-B, TWC means True Wine Cabinet, 24 is the width in inches, DZ is dual zone, L is a left hinge (handle on the right), SG is a stainless glass door (SS is solid stainless) and the final letter is the design version.

Most common True Residential repairs
This list follows True’s service manual and the repair items in True’s 2025 residential warranty claim guidelines.
| Symptom | Usual cause | Part / fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet warm, “Refrigeration Error” on the display | Dirty condenser coil, failed fan, or a sealed-system or compressor fault | Clean the coil first; then test fans, inverter and sealed system |
| High Temperature Alarm after a hot day or heavy use | Clogged condenser, door left open, overloading, failed fan | Coil cleaning, fan motor, door alignment |
| Condenser fan not spinning | Failed condenser fan motor (120 VAC on 24″ units, 10 VDC on 15″ units) | Replace the correct-voltage fan motor |
| Frost on the evaporator, weak airflow inside | Evaporator fan motor or its driver board (120 VAC in, 12 VDC out) | Replace motor or driver board |
| Compartment or Evaporator Probe Failure | Failed temperature probe or loose connection | Replace the probe, then interrupt power to reset |
| Display dead or erratic, unit not responding | Electronic controller / display board | Replace the controller and set the model-select code |
| Compressor not starting, inverter LED flashing 3 or 4 times | Inverter (VCC) board or compressor winding fault | Test windings, then replace the inverter board or compressor |
| Door Ajar Alarm, frost or sweating at the door | Torn gasket, sagging door, loose handle, bad door switch | Gasket, door adjustment, switch |
| Interior lights out | LED driver or LED light module | Replace driver or module |

Condenser airflow is the root of most True service calls
True undercounter units breathe through a front-access condenser behind the kickplate or rainshield. Under a counter, lint, pet hair and dust collect there fast. When the coil clogs, head pressure rises, the compressor runs longer, the inverter heats up, and the control eventually posts a High Temperature Alarm or, after 15 hours of failing to reach set point, a Refrigeration Error. A clogged coil can also push the inverter into temperature protection (1 flash, power limited above 203°F). True says to clean the coil regularly, and coil cleaning is not covered by warranty. We clean it on every True call and then confirm the fans and sealed system are healthy.
Variable-speed compressor and inverter board
Many True Residential units use a variable-speed compressor driven by an inverter (VCC) board. The board reports its own health with an LED: one flash every 15 seconds is normal. Two flashes means it lost the thermostat signal from the control, so we check for about 120 VAC on the purple signal wire before blaming the inverter. Three flashes is an inverter hardware fault. Four flashes points at the compressor: overload, start failure, rotor position failure or inverter overheating. Before replacing anything, we ohm-test the compressor for an open winding or a short to ground and compare the three winding output voltages. Matching voltages with a dead compressor means a compressor job; mismatched voltages point to the board. Getting this right matters, since True’s own guidelines allow 5–6 hours of labor for a compressor replacement.
Controller replacement needs the model-select code
The electronic controller sits in the interior ceiling on most undercounter models, behind the rear back cover on TUF freezers, and in the center mullion ceiling on dual-zone models. A replacement controller must be set to the correct model-select code (001, 002, 101, 102, 105, 200 or 300) or the unit will run the wrong temperature and defrost logic. Dual-zone and freezer units drop into a safe mode when a probe fails (10 minutes off with only the evaporator fan, then 10 minutes fan plus compressor), so a wine cabinet that cycles oddly is often running on a failed probe.
What we actually find on True calls
Most of the True units we have repaired since 2024 were commercial reach-ins, prep coolers and freezers, and their failures match what we see on True Residential: dirty condensers, fan motors, door gaskets and hinges, thermostats and, less often, sealed-system problems.

1. Dirty condensers and fan motors
In March 2024 a True refrigerator stopped working because of a failed fan and a dust-packed condenser; we replaced the fan, cleaned the condenser and replaced a door gasket. In November 2025 a True freezer was noisy when its door closed and needed a new fan motor. In December 2025 a noisy, leaking two-door True needed a new condenser fan motor, and in March 2026 a garage freezer with a dead fan was not cooling until we replaced its condenser fan motor.
2. Doors, gaskets and thermostats
In July 2024 a True commercial refrigerator was not cooling; it needed a new thermostat and a door gasket. In December 2024 a True door would not close, and a new door hinge fixed it. A torn gasket or a door that does not close lets warm air in all day, which is why we check both on every True call.

3. Sealed-system problems
In April 2025 we diagnosed three commercial refrigerators in one visit: one had a failed compressor and another was low on refrigerant and needed a True evaporator. Our technicians are EPA 608 certified for this refrigerant work.

True Residential alarm messages and what they mean
True Residential does not use short codes like “E1”. The controls show plain-text alarm messages on the display, and the inverter board signals with LED flash patterns. The messages differ between the 15″/24″ undercounter controller, the TR-30/36 column control and the two generations of TUI ice machine, so the tables below are grouped by product. Most alarms reset by interrupting power once the cause is fixed; on the TUI-D ice machine, pressing POWER twice clears the alarm history. Write down the exact message, your model number and any LED flash count before you call. It helps us bring the right part on the first visit.

Before you call: safe checks
- Reset the power. Turn off the breaker for 30 seconds and back on. Many True alarms, including Refrigeration Error, reset this way. If the alarm returns, the fault is real.
- Look at the condenser grille. With the unit unplugged, open the kickplate or rainshield and vacuum loose lint from the front. Brush with the fins, never across them. Do not use a hose or pressure washer.
- Check the door. Make sure nothing blocks the door or drawer and the gasket seals all the way around. Door Ajar alarms trigger at 7 minutes on undercounter units and 5 minutes on columns.
- Ice machine water. On a TUI-15, confirm the water supply valve is open and the filter is installed and seated. The unit will not make ice without a filter.
- Ice machine drain. Look for a kinked or crushed drain line behind or under the unit if you see a drain error.
- Check the plug. True units must be plugged straight into the outlet. Extension cords and adapter plugs cause problems and void the warranty.
Do not open the sealed system, remove the inverter cover or work on live wiring. Those repairs need a technician.
Denver and Colorado notes for True Residential
True does not publish any altitude-specific guidance for its residential refrigeration, and refrigerators are not affected by altitude the way gas cooking is. The Colorado issues we see with True are about temperature and water:
- Cold garages and outdoor kitchens. The TUI ice machine alarms when the condenser discharge air falls to 50°F (Ambient too Cold). A TUI in an unheated garage, basement bar or outdoor kitchen in a Denver winter must be winterized if the space can drop below 32°F. Freeze damage is excluded from True’s warranty.
- Hot, tight installs. Ambient too Hot trips at 155°F at the condenser discharge. Undercounter units in tight cabinetry or next to a grill need clear airflow at the front grille.
- Water and scale. Much of the Denver area has moderately hard water. On the TUI, use the HSC (high-scale) setting and replace the filter every 6 months instead of 12. Cubes that are not fully formed usually mean it is time to descale and change the filter.
Find your True Residential model and serial number
| Product | Where the tag is |
|---|---|
| 15″/24″ undercounter (TUR, TUF, TBC, TWC) | Data tag on the interior upper left-hand wall |
| TR-30/36 full-size columns | Left interior wall, near the freezer wire basket or the refrigerator upper drawer |
| TUI-15 clear ice machine (D version) | Serial label on the upper left interior wall; it also lists the refrigerant type |
True’s parts lookup works by serial number, so a clear photo of the tag is the most useful thing you can send us.
True Residential maintenance schedule
| Task | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean the refrigeration condenser coil | Regularly; True gives no fixed interval. Check it at least every 6 months, more often with pets | Prevents Refrigeration Error, high-temp alarms and inverter overheating; cleaning is not covered by warranty |
| TUI ice machine descale and sanitize | Every 6 months | Scale stops water flow and causes thin cubes and Long Ice; use only True-approved chemicals |
| TUI ice machine condenser cleaning | Every 6 months | Avoids Ambient too Hot and high-pressure alarms |
| TUI water filter | Every 12 months (low-scale water) or 6 months (high-scale water) | The unit will not make ice without a working filter |
| TR column icemaker water filter | 300 gallons or 6 months | The WATER FILTER message comes on at end of life |
| Winterize a TUI in an unheated space | Before freezing weather | Freeze damage is not covered |

Repair or replace your True Residential?
True builds its residential units with long coverage on the sealed system: 6 years parts and labor, and parts coverage out to year 12 on registered refrigeration units. That tells you how long True expects the cabinet and sealed system to last. Most failures we see are fans, probes, controllers, LED drivers, gaskets and ice machine valves and pumps. These are the repairs worth doing on almost any True unit, because a new built-in True unit costs many thousands of dollars and is sized to fit your cabinetry.
The harder call is a compressor or sealed-system failure out of warranty. That is a long job (True’s own guidelines allow 5–6 hours for a compressor and 6 hours for an evaporator) and needs EPA 608 certified work. If the unit is still in the years 7–12 parts-only window, the part may be covered and only labor is billed. We will give you a written quote and tell you plainly when a repair is not worth it.

It means the unit ran for 15 hours without reaching its set temperature. The most common cause is a clogged condenser coil behind the kickplate, followed by a failed condenser or evaporator fan, a refrigerant leak or a compressor or inverter fault. Cycling the breaker resets the message, but if it comes back the unit needs service.
Long fill means the reservoir did not fill in time. Check that the water supply valve is open and the filter is installed and seated, because the TUI will not make ice without a filter. If the water pressure is within 20–80 psi and the filter is fine, the water inlet valve has usually failed.
True refrigeration carries 3 years parts and labor and 6 years parts and labor on the sealed system, plus sealed-system parts only in years 7–12 if the unit was registered within 12 months of install. We repair True units in or out of warranty and back every repair with our 90-day parts and labor warranty.
