Since January 2024 we have completed about 95 Kenmore washer calls. About one in four was a drain problem, the most common complaint by far. Leaks, spin problems and noise each made up about one in seven or eight calls. Drain pumps, lid and door locks, actuators and couplings, suspension parts and water valves were the parts we replaced most often.

Who built your Kenmore washer?
Kenmore washers were made for Sears by other manufacturers, and the parts inside match the maker. The first three digits of the model number tell you which one:
- 110. Whirlpool. Top-loaders and some front-loaders. They use Whirlpool parts and Whirlpool-style codes.
- 796. LG. Many Kenmore front-loaders. They use LG parts and LG-style codes such as OE and LE.
- 417. Frigidaire (Electrolux).
Send us the full model number when you call and we’ll know which drain pump, lock or motor part your washer needs.

1. Not draining
- Something in the drain pump. Socks, coins and hair ties jam the pump. On front-loaders, check the pump filter behind the small door at the bottom front; in September 2025 a clogged pump filter was the whole problem.
- A failed drain pump. The most common part we replace on Kenmore washers.
- The drain hose. Kinked, clogged, or pushed too far into the standpipe.
- Lid switch or pressure switch. On some top-loaders, a failed lid switch stops the washer from draining and spinning.

2. Won’t spin or agitate
- Lid lock or door lock. The washer won’t spin until it can lock. In September 2024 a Kenmore 500 Series lid stayed locked and wouldn’t open.
- Actuator (shifter) and coupling. On Whirlpool-built top-loaders, these switch between agitate and spin. Both are common Kenmore repairs.
- Motor and rotor position sensor. On LG-built front-loaders, the LE code means the motor is overloaded or locked. Sometimes it’s the rotor position sensor, sometimes the stator or rotor itself.
3. Leaking
- Door boot (front-load). A torn or worn door seal.
- Water inlet valve. A cracked valve, or one that won’t close and keeps filling the washer.
- Hoses. Fill hoses, the drain hose and internal hoses. In September 2026 a leak was a damaged drain hose.
- Not the washer at all. We also check the standpipe and floor drain before replacing anything.

4. Noise, shaking or walking
A Kenmore that bangs on spin, wobbles or walks across the floor usually has worn suspension rods, springs or shocks. On a top-loader, a loud grinding noise that ends with no spin can be the gearcase. In July 2026 a Kenmore making a horrific noise needed a gearcase, an actuator and a clutch kit. A one-time thump is often just an unbalanced load.
From our service log
- October 2024, top-loader not working. We replaced the coupling and the actuator.
- May 2025, LE code on an LG-built front-loader. A new rotor position sensor fixed it.
- June 2025, stuck on spin. The actuator had failed; we replaced it.
- January 2026, not draining properly. A new drain pump fixed it.
- July 2026, very noisy. We replaced the suspension rods.
Common codes on LG-built Kenmore washers
Codes depend on who built your Kenmore. On LG-built models (model number starting with 796.), LG lists these:
| Code | What LG says it means |
|---|---|
| OE | Water can’t drain. Check the drain hose and drain filter. |
| LE | Motor overloaded or locked. |
| IE | Not enough water supply or low pressure. |
| UE | Load is unbalanced. |
| dE | Top-load: lid isn’t closed properly. |
On Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers (110.), the codes follow Whirlpool’s system; see our Whirlpool washer page. Your owner’s manual lists the codes for your exact model.

Before you call: three quick checks
- Not draining? On a front-loader, clean the drain pump filter (put towels down first). On any washer, check the drain hose for kinks.
- Won’t spin? Make sure nothing is caught in the lid or door latch, and redistribute the load.
- No power? Check the outlet and the breaker.

Repair or replace?
Drain pumps, locks, actuators, couplings, valves, door boots and suspension parts are usually worth repairing on a Kenmore washer, and the parts are easy to get from the original maker. When an older washer needs a gearcase, a motor and a board at once, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most often something is stuck in the drain pump, the pump has failed, or the drain hose is kinked or clogged. On front-loaders, clean the drain pump filter first. On some top-loaders a failed lid switch also stops draining.
