Since January 2024 we have completed about 125 Maytag washer calls. About one in six came in with an error code on the display. Drain problems, noise and leaks each made up about one in seven or eight calls, and so did lid and door lock problems. On top-loaders the big repairs were gearcases, transmissions, actuators (shifters) and clutches; on front-loaders, door boots, door locks and drain pumps.

Maytag is part of Whirlpool, and most current Maytag washers share their design and parts with Whirlpool washers, which keeps parts easy to get.
1. Won’t spin or won’t agitate (top-load)
A modern Maytag top-loader has to lock the lid, then shift between wash and spin. A failure anywhere in that chain looks the same from the outside:
- Lid lock. If the lid can’t lock, the washer won’t spin.
- Actuator (shifter). It switches the gearcase between agitate and spin. A failed actuator is common on Bravos and newer top-loaders.
- Gearcase, transmission or clutch. A noisy washer that stops spinning, or a basket that turns slowly while the agitator spins fast, usually means one of these.
- Coupling, drive hub or motor. On older belt and direct-drive models.
- Control board. Less often, but we test it.
2. Lid or door won’t lock or open
Maytag’s own codes cover this: on top-loaders LdL means the lid isn’t locking and LdU means it can’t unlock; on front-loaders F5 E2 means the door isn’t locking properly. Check for clothing or detergent buildup around the latch first. If that’s not it, the lock itself has usually failed. Lid and door locks are among the parts we replace most often on Maytag washers, including once after the owner had already tried a replacement lock himself.
3. Not draining
On front-loaders Maytag’s F9 E1 means draining is taking longer than expected; on top-loaders the code is drn. Common causes:
- A sock or coin in the drain pump. Many front-loaders have a pump filter behind a small door at the bottom front.
- A failed drain pump. One of the parts we replace most often.
- The drain hose. Kinked, clogged, pushed too far into the standpipe, or not secured. In June 2026 a drain hose that wasn’t held in place had simply fallen out.
4. Leaking
- Door boot (front-load). The rubber seal at the door tears or gets cut by a coin or a zipper.
- Water inlet valve. A valve that drips, or one that won’t shut off; in November 2025 a Maytag kept filling with water until we replaced the valve.
- Drain hose and pump. Loose clamps, cracked hoses, or a pump seal.
- Too many suds. Maytag’s Sud code means excess suds; use only HE detergent.

5. Noise and shaking
Banging on spin usually means worn suspension rods or shocks; a grinding roar on a front-loader points to tub bearings. A top-loader that’s noisy and then stops spinning often has a failing gearcase. Unbalanced loads also matter: Maytag’s Ofb code means the load is out of balance.
From our service log
- October 2024, top-loader not spinning. A new coupling and actuator.
- January 2025, noisy top-loader. The gearcase had failed; we replaced it.
- August 2025, wouldn’t start a cycle (F7 E1). A new actuator fixed it.
- June 2026, front-loader drum stuck. The spider arm behind the basket had jammed against the drum; the basket and rear drum were replaced.
- July 2026, water never drained out (F7 E5). The clutch was replaced.
Maytag washer codes
From Maytag’s published lists. Not every code appears on every model; check your owner’s manual for yours.

| drn | Top-load: washer is not draining properly. |
| F9 E1 | Front-load: drain is taking longer than expected. |

Code still on the display? Call 720-230-1229. We answer 24/7 and can usually be there the same or next day.
Before you call: three quick checks
- Won’t spin? Redistribute the load and make sure nothing is caught in the lid or door latch.
- Front-loader not draining? Clean the drain pump filter behind the small door at the bottom front. Put towels down first.
- Slow to fill? Check that both hot and cold faucets are fully open and the hoses aren’t kinked.
Find your Maytag model number
According to Maytag, on top-loaders the tag is beneath the lid on the tub rim; on front-loaders it’s inside the door, on the rim of the opening. Maytag top-load washer models usually start with MVW and front-load models with MHW.

Repair or replace?
Lid and door locks, actuators, drain pumps, inlet valves, door boots, suspension and most control boards are usually worth repairing on a Maytag washer. A gearcase, transmission or drum replacement on an older washer is where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number first. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
The most common causes are a lid lock that won't lock, a failed actuator (shifter), or a worn gearcase, transmission or clutch. Check that nothing is caught in the lid latch and redistribute the load first.
Maytag says LdL means the lid is not locking. Check for items under the lid and detergent buildup around the lock. If the code comes back, the lid lock usually needs to be replaced.
Maytag says F9 E1 means the drain is taking longer than expected. Clean the drain pump filter and check the drain hose. If it still won't drain, the drain pump or drain assembly usually needs replacing.
Locks, actuators, pumps, valves, door boots and suspension are usually worth it. When an older washer needs a gearcase, transmission or drum, we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number before any work.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
