Thermador refrigerators are built by BSH, the same group as Bosch, and they use variable-speed inverter compressors, electronic dampers and sensors that keep the temperature tight. When one of those parts drifts, the symptom is often ice where it shouldn’t be. Our technicians, with more than 30 years of combined experience and over 10,000 appliance repairs behind the company, see the same Thermador problems again and again: ice buildup, fans, inverter and user boards, dampers and sensors, and door gaskets.

1. Ice building up
Ice where it shouldn’t be is the most common Thermador refrigerator complaint we see. In February 2026 a Thermador with ice building up needed a new freezer fan. In September 2026 another Thermador, one we had repaired before, was icing up again; this time the door gasket wasn’t sealing, and a new gasket fixed it. A gasket that lets in humid air turns into frost on the coil and ice on the shelves.
2. Not cooling
In September 2025 the top section of a Thermador stopped working, and it needed an evaporator part and a new condenser fan. In March 2026 we were called to a Thermador that wasn’t getting cold and found one of its fans packed with dust. In September 2024 a Thermador freezer stopped working.

3. Cooling too much
In January 2026 a Thermador was sometimes running too cold. We replaced the temperature sensor and the damper, the motorized flap that controls how much cold air comes in from the freezer.
4. Inverter boards, user boards and power
In August 2025 a Thermador had ice forming all over, and the inverter control board for its compressor needed replacing. In March 2025 a Thermador ice maker needed a new user board; the replacement board’s connectors didn’t match, and once reconnected, the original board started working again, so it stayed. In March 2026 a Thermador had stopped completely with no power.
5. Dispensers, ice and water
In July 2026 the filtered-water button on a Thermador dispenser broke, and we repaired the push button rather than replacing the whole panel. In February 2026 we were called to a Thermador freezer whose water and ice features weren’t working. In September 2024 we checked the water valve on a Thermador as part of a freezer repair.

Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the door gaskets. Close a sheet of paper in the door; if it slides out easily, the gasket isn’t sealing.
- Keep the toe-kick grille clear so the condenser can breathe.
- Check the settings on the control panel before assuming a part has failed, and give it 24 hours after a change.
Repair or replace?
Fans, gaskets, sensors, dampers and dispenser parts are well worth repairing on a Thermador. Inverter and control boards cost more, so on an older unit we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
On our calls the causes were a failed freezer fan, a door gasket that wasn't sealing, and an inverter control problem. The ice is a symptom, so the cause has to be fixed.
A failing temperature sensor or damper lets in too much cold air. On one of our calls we replaced both.
Fans, a dusty condenser area, and inverter or control boards are the usual causes. We test before we order parts.
Yes. Both are made by BSH, and some components are shared.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
