Maytag is part of Whirlpool, and Maytag dishwashers share their pumps, spray arms, valves and control boards with Whirlpool and KitchenAid dishwashers. Our technicians, with more than 30 years of combined experience and over 10,000 appliance repairs behind the company, see the same Maytag problems again and again: clogged or failed drain pumps, leaks at the door and spray arms, and control boards. We also tell you plainly when an older model’s parts are no longer made.

1. Not draining (F9E1)
Maytag lists F9E1 as a long drain. On the display it can show as F9 and E1, one after the other. In October 2026 a Maytag that wouldn’t drain after a cycle was showing exactly that, and it needed a new drain pump. In August 2025 another Maytag stopped draining because a piece of glass had jammed the drain pump; we removed it and the pump ran again.
The drain also depends on the sink. If the dishwasher drains into a disposer, a clogged disposer or a knockout plug left in a new disposer will stop it.
2. Leaking
In June 2025 a Maytag was leaking from the bottom right corner of the door. We replaced the door seal, a wash arm and the manifold. In June 2026 a leaking Maytag needed a new lower spray arm. In April 2026 a Maytag that was showing an error code had an internal leak because the screws on the right side of the door had worked loose; we tightened them and leveled the dishwasher, with no new parts needed.

3. Not filling, or not enough water
In March 2024 a Maytag that had sat unused for six months wouldn’t fill, although water poured into the bottom sprayed through the arms normally, which points to the water supply or inlet valve. In October 2026 a Maytag was blinking Sanitized and not getting enough water.
In May 2026 a Maytag kept losing water because a smart water shut-off device the owner had installed on the line was reading the dishwasher’s water use and shutting off the supply. The dishwasher itself was fine.

4. Won’t start, won’t turn off, or door problems
- Control board. In September 2024 a Maytag that wasn’t working needed a new control board with its panel, and in June 2026 a Maytag that wouldn’t start needed a new control board.
- Power. In October 2024 the problem was a bad outlet, not the dishwasher.
- Won’t turn off. In April 2024 we were called to a Maytag that kept running.
- Door hinge. In June 2026 a Maytag door problem was fixed with a new right door hinge.
Older models are a different story. In June 2025 one Maytag needed a control board that was no longer available anywhere, and in January 2026 an older Maytag that wouldn’t drain had no parts left to buy. In both cases we told the owner right away, so they could decide on a replacement.

Maytag dishwasher codes
From Maytag’s own error code pages. Codes vary by model; check your manual for yours.
| Code | What Maytag says it means |
|---|---|
| F9E1 | Long drain. |
| F9E2 | Drain motor error. |
| F8E5 | Fill valve stuck open. |
| F8E4 | Water in the drip tray. Maytag’s steps point to the water connections, the float switch and excess suds. |
Before you call: three quick checks
- Clean the filter and check the drain hose for kinks. Run the disposer before you start the dishwasher.
- Reset the power. Maytag recommends unplugging the dishwasher, or turning off its breaker, for 30 seconds.
- Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. Too many suds can cause leaks and drain codes.
Repair or replace?
Drain pumps, spray arms, gaskets, hinges and valves are inexpensive repairs on a Maytag dishwasher. A control board costs more, and on some older models it’s no longer made, so we tell you before you spend anything. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Maytag lists F9E1 as a long drain. Clean the filter and check the drain hose, disposer and air gap. If it still won't drain, the drain pump may be clogged or failed.
On our calls the causes were a worn door seal, spray arms, the manifold, and loose door screws. Excess suds from the wrong detergent can also cause leaks.
Check the outlet or breaker first; on one of our calls the outlet was bad. After that, the usual causes are the control board, the door latch or a door hinge.
Usually, because most parts are shared with Whirlpool. A few older control boards are no longer made, and if that's the case we tell you before you pay for a repair.
The service call is $99 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. You get a written quote for parts and labor before we start, so there are no surprises.
