Maytag is part of Whirlpool, so Maytag refrigerators share their sealed systems, fans, ice makers and control boards with Whirlpool, KitchenAid and many Kenmore models, and parts are easy to get. Our technicians, with more than 30 years of combined experience and over 10,000 appliance repairs behind the company, see the same handful of Maytag failures again and again: evaporator and condenser fans, compressor start relays, defrost problems, ice makers, and control boards.

1. Not cooling, or the freezer is warm
Most Maytag calls start with a warm fresh food section. The first thing we check is whether the fans are running, because a stopped fan looks exactly like a failed compressor from the outside.
- Evaporator fan. It moves cold air from the freezer coil into both sections. In August 2024 a Maytag that had been noisy for a while stopped cooling; the evaporator fan had failed and we replaced it.
- Condenser fan. It cools the compressor under the refrigerator. In April 2025 a Maytag that was only partly cooling needed a new condenser fan.
- Start relay and capacitor. When the compressor clicks but won’t run, the relay is often the cause. In March 2025 a new compressor start relay and capacitor got a Maytag cooling again.
- Compressor and sealed system. In September 2024 we found one Maytag low on refrigerant and another with a compressor that had to be replaced, and in November 2024 a Maytag freezer needed sealed-system work. When a repair like that doesn’t make sense for an older unit, we say so.
2. Frost on the coil and defrost problems
If the defrost system fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coil until air can’t pass through it. The freezer may still feel cold while the fresh food section warms up. In February 2025 we opened a Maytag that wasn’t cooling and found the coil packed with frost. In May 2026 another Maytag had ice under the fresh food evaporator; we replaced the defrost sensor and defrosted the unit.

3. Ice maker and dispenser
Ice makers are the second most common reason Maytag owners call us. In May 2024 a Maytag that stopped making ice needed a new ice maker. In October 2025 another Maytag ice maker was fixed with a new module. In May 2026 a Maytag showed E2 on the ice maker while it was running a harvest test; the ice maker and the defrost sensor were replaced.
Not every ice maker problem is the ice maker. In September 2026 a Maytag ice maker had no power at all, and the cause was damaged wiring at the bottom of the door, which we repaired. In July 2025 a Maytag ice and water dispenser stopped working completely.

4. Controls, display and power
- Cycling on and off. In December 2024 a Maytag that kept turning on and off needed a new control board.
- Display and dispenser dead. In March 2026 a Maytag’s front control panel, lights and dispenser all stopped working at once.
- Burning smell. In November 2025 a Maytag display was flashing, the refrigerator wouldn’t turn on, and there was an electrical smell. Unplug the refrigerator if you notice that and call us.

5. Warm air leaks and water on the floor
In June 2026 a Maytag freezer drawer was leaking cold air and frosting up. The drawer wasn’t held tight by its retaining screws, so it never sealed. We defrosted the ice and tightened the screws, and the gasket sealed again without any new parts.
In January 2026 a customer called about a Maytag freezer leaking water from the bottom corner. The freezer was fine: the water was coming from the joint between the wall and floor behind the dryer next to it. Finding the real source first saves you from paying for a part you don’t need.

Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the temperature settings. Maytag recommends 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer, and says to allow 24 hours after a change.
- Clean the condenser coils and make sure nothing blocks the vents inside the freezer and fresh food section.
- Check the ice maker switch and the water supply. Make sure the ice maker is turned on and the water line valve is open.
Repair or replace?
Fans, relays, defrost parts, ice makers and control boards are all reasonable repairs on a Maytag refrigerator. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak costs more, so on an older unit we give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually the evaporator fan has stopped or the coil is covered in frost from a defrost problem, so cold air can't reach the fresh food section. A failed condenser fan or start relay can also cause it.
Check that the ice maker is on and the water valve is open. If it is, the cause is often the ice maker itself, the water inlet valve, or wiring in the door. On one of our calls the ice maker had no power because of damaged door wiring.
Maytag is part of Whirlpool, and many Maytag refrigerator parts are shared with Whirlpool, KitchenAid and some Kenmore models, which keeps them easy to get.
