Maytag is part of Whirlpool, so Maytag ranges use the same bake elements, safety thermostats and control boards as many Whirlpool ranges. Our technicians, with more than 30 years of combined experience and over 10,000 appliance repairs behind the company, find the same handful of Maytag oven problems again and again, and the most common by far is a failed bake element.

1. Oven not heating, or heating slowly
On a Maytag electric range, a bake element that’s broken or burned through is the usual reason the oven won’t heat. In November 2024 a Maytag oven that stopped working needed a new heating element. In January 2026 a Maytag that wasn’t heating needed a new bake element, and in September 2026 a Maytag that was heating slowly needed the same repair. In May 2025 we were called to a Maytag single oven that wouldn’t heat.
2. Sparks and burned elements
In October 2024 a six-year-old Maytag electric range showed visible sparks when the oven started to preheat. The bake element had burned through, and we replaced it. If you see sparks or a bright glow in one spot of the element, turn the oven off at the breaker.

3. Safety thermostats and control boards
When a new element doesn’t fix it, the problem is upstream. In October 2025 a Maytag oven that wasn’t heating needed a new safety thermostat and a new control board. A safety thermostat opens when the oven overheats, and if the control is causing the overheating, both parts have to be replaced.
4. Glass cooktops and older ranges
In December 2025 the glass cooktop of a Maytag range shattered, and a replacement glass top for that model was no longer available. In February 2026 an older Admiral gas range, a brand Maytag used to make, needed a new seal and knobs. We found a seal from another model that fit, and knobs from another model can replace the originals.

Before you call: three quick checks
- Check the breaker. An electric range needs both halves of a 240-volt breaker; if one half trips, the cooktop may work while the oven doesn’t.
- Look at the bake element on the oven floor. Breaks, blisters or burned spots mean it needs replacing.
- Don’t run self-clean on an oven that’s already acting up. The high heat is hard on elements, thermostats and boards.
Repair or replace?
Bake elements and thermostats are inexpensive repairs on a Maytag range. Control boards and glass tops cost more, and some glass tops are no longer made, so we check availability and give you an honest repair-versus-replace number. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts, and the $99 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
